AsiaRooms.com - Enjoy Unique Cultural Spectacle at Thailand's Phi Ta Khon Festival

The annual Phi Ta Khon Festival will be held in Thailand's Loei region from June 22nd to 24th 2012.

2012-05-11
LOEI, THAILAND, May 11, 2012 (Press-News.org) Visitors to the Loei region of Thailand can get involved in a unique and colourful tradition this June when the Phi Ta Khon Festival comes to town.

Held from June 22nd to 24th this year, the event is part of the wider Boon Luang merit-making ceremony and has been held annually for many years in honour of Prince Vessandara, the Buddha's penultimate incarnation.

According to folklore, the return of the prince was such a joyous occasion that ghosts and spirits rose up to join in the festivities, a story that is honoured each year with a grand parade filled with colourful costumes.

Each village will hold its own procession, in which participants don imposing ghost masks created from a bamboo sticky rice steamer, as well as outfits made from various pieces of fabric stitched together and special bells around their waists.

Parade participants often interact with onlookers in various mischievous ways, while prizes are on offer for the best costumes.

Rocket displays and prayer sessions are also key parts of the Phi Ta Khon Festival, making it a fascinating and one-of-a-kind cultural event.

Cultural enthusiasts can find a wide variety of hotels in Thailand at AsiaRooms.com, such as the Loei Palace Hotel.

Chronic cocaine use triggers changes in brains neuron structure
2012-05-11
Buffalo, N.Y. – Chronic exposure to cocaine reduces the expression of a protein known to regulate brain plasticity, according to new, in vivo research on the molecular basis of cocaine addiction. That reduction drives structural changes in the brain, which produce greater sensitivity to the rewarding effects of cocaine. The finding suggests a potential new target for development of a treatment for cocaine addiction.
