Advanced Waste Services Helps Clean-up at Closed Kenosha Engine Plant

Sustainable remediation process encourages business to transition from aspirational to measurable sustainability programs.

KENOSHA, WI, May 11, 2012

At the site of the former Kenosha Chrysler Engine Plant, oily wastewaters and unused coolants were left behind in drums and press pits after the plant closed. Advanced Waste Services has been helping to remove and recycle the oily wastewaters and unused coolants.

The non-hazardous oily wastewater will be recycled using a treatment process that separates the oil from the water; resulting in thousands of gallons of reclaimed fresh water. An additional benefit is the reclaimed oil can be reused.

"Our focus in reclaiming the fresh water and oil from the oily wastewater helps businesses recognize sustainability is possible during remediation projects," says Jaymes Barrera, results advisor for Advanced Waste Services, Inc. "Additionally, this project allows Advanced Waste Services to help repurpose the land and create a sustainable neighborhood for these Kenosha families."

Economic pressures are encouraging companies to adopt enhanced sustainability programs such as measuring the amount of freshwater reclaimed from a wastewater stream. However, many companies don't have the ability to do so. Water reclamation is a good starting point for companies that need to shift from aspirational sustainability statements to measureable sustainability statements. Advanced Waste Services is prepared to help clients make this transition to measurable water reclamation.
