NEW YORK, NY, June 27, 2012 (Press-News.org) A new contest set up through a partnership between Michelle Obama and Epicurious is encouraging American children to create healthy meals to raise nutrition awareness. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal outlines the project, also known as The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. The contest will draw national attention, as children and parents from all U.S. states and territories are invited to participate in an effort to create a healthy, appetizing and affordable lunchtime meal. Located in San Diego, S&S Bakery supports this collective effort, as the company itself has been a longtime supporter of USDA regulations in American school systems.
The challenge will incorporate previous initiatives set forth by the USDA, Department of Agriculture and Department of Education to encourage healthy lunches in America's public schools. Inspired by Michelle Obama's Let's Move! Program, Epicurious has decided to join the fight against childhood obesity. The top meals will be collected in a free online cookbook, and fifty-six chosen winners will be invited to a Kids' "State Dinner" at the White House in August to enjoy several of the winning dishes.
As a follower of USDA regulations, S&S Bakery has often altered its procedures and recipes to better fit the health standards of today's youth. The local company has supplied baked goods, including whole grain breads, to many public schools in the San Diego area. President of S&S Bakery, Steven Fadick, comments, "Our company has recently had to modify our recipes and baking procedures to meet the new USDA requirements to supply bread products that are 51 percent whole grain. While these new requirements were initially a challenge, we support these changes in order to improve the health and eating habits of the nation's children."
According to the article the competition will not only raise awareness about proper nutrition during school lunch, but will also encourage families to make healthy meals any time of the day. Aside from the health aspect, First Lady Michelle Obama is excited about the imaginative spark behind the project. She notes, "With parents and kids all across the country getting creative in the kitchen, I know we'll find healthy meals that every family will enjoy. And I can't wait to try the kids' creations myself."
Fadick agrees with Mrs. Obama and hopes that this experience will encourage more children to become involved in the kitchen. "My employees and I work in the culinary arts and baking sciences arena on a daily basis. It is not something that many children are exposed to, and I hope The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge will show students just how fun a career in the kitchen can be."

People love to classify and apply labels. It's a natural human tendency.
But when it comes to kids and the criminal justice system, how early is too early to label a child?
The New York Times Magazine recently grappled with this question. The article described a boy whose parents watched as their three-year-old began turning into a more violent and aggressive nine-year-old.
The nine-year-old was subsequently given the label "psychotic."
But critics worry that the boy and others like him could face a pre-determined life path, all because of a premature ...
