How to Be Safe on the Fourth of July

The NHTSA has rolled out its impaired driving prevention campaign because the Fourth of July just might be the most dangerous holiday to drive.

MIAMI, FL, July 02, 2012

"Drive sober or get pulled over," says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as part of its impaired driving prevention campaign. The campaign is intended to prevent impaired driving throughout the Fourth of July holiday period (July 2 - July 6), by promoting awareness and prevention through advertising.

Fourth of July Accident Statistics

The NHTSA has rolled out its impaired driving prevention campaign because the Fourth of July just might be the most dangerous holiday to drive. And if you cause an alcohol-related fatality, you'll likely face DUI manslaughter charges. It's the agency's goal to prevent that from happening.

According to the NHTSA, 392 people lost their lives in car wrecks during the 2010 Fourth of July holiday period. Almost 40 percent of those wrecks were caused because of DUI.

And because the fireworks don't go off until dark, those wrecks usually occur at night - a full 80 percent of fatalities happened at night during the 2010 July 4 holiday.

Most Dangerous Fourth of July Firework

While we're on the topic of fireworks, contrary to what you might think, a big firework isn't necessarily the most dangerous Fourth of July firework. Be careful when you're using these:

- Firecrackers. Firecrackers routinely cause the most injuries out of all commonly available fireworks. They're likely to explode while in a person's hand, causing serious injury.

Firecrackers top the list, followed by sparklers and rockets. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), thousands of people are injured by fireworks every year.
