Peter Workum Encourages the Development of Entrepreneurial Spirit

A recent Washington, D.C. event gave entrepreneurs the chance to test out their bright business ideas--ultimately winning the praise of business development experts like Peter Workum.

NEW YORK, NY, July 16, 2012

In recent months, there has been a great deal of political discussion and debate about the relationship between the government and businesses--specifically, about the role the government should or should not play in the cultivation of new companies. A recent Washington, D.C. event framed this debate in an entirely new context, however. The event in question gave city officials a chance to show off their entrepreneurial skills and business abilities, all while presenting solutions to common problems faced by the federal and local governments. The event, called Startup Weekend, has won the praise of many business development professionals from around the country--including Peter Workum.

The Washington Post describes Startup Weekend as a competition "that had entrepreneurs create new business ventures aimed at solving problems facing the federal and local governments." The entrepreneurs who participated in the event were given just 54 hours to not only devise a business idea, but also overcome any obstacles that arose--ultimately ending with a viable business idea within the span of a single weekend.

The event was designed to kick start the entrepreneurial spirit in would-be business owners who may otherwise never receive a chance to see their ideas take flight. The event also caught the attention of Peter Workum, a business development and finance expert who has assisted with the formation and growth of numerous companies. Workum has responded to the Startup Weekend idea with his own statement to the press.

"Entrepreneurship is all about connecting business cause and effect," says Peter Workum in his statement to the press, noting the Startup Weekend's unique problem-solving mentality. He goes on to offer measured praise for the event.

"The fact that some public sector employees are working to establish infrastructure that will facilitate the creation of new business is encouraging," observes Peter Workum. "This sort of public sector endeavor will have to make the transition from beta test to permanent and widespread fixture to effectively promote the start-up and development of new business. All things considered, however, it is a great first step, and a fine blueprint for future endeavors."

The Washington Post article highlights one of the most noteworthy entrants in the Startup Weekend Competition, an online platform called Business One Stop. Business One Stop is described as "an online portal where local businesses could input all of the information needed to register and license a business in the District." The article continues by noting that the site "also provides information about incentive programs, job training and other city resources."

Other participants in the Startup Weekend event included an online discount portal, called The Daily Hookup, and a store called DirectMale, which offers high-ticket items, such as custom suits, for discounted prices.
