Target Video shows are a rare experience. They are exhibited in film festivals, museums, galleries and venues that draw a live audience. These shows are not available on YouTube or for sale. They are preserved as an art piece. Art Center Sarasota has opened their doors to share the Target Video experience.Target Video was organized and established when black-and-white reel-to-reel was the cutting edge in technology and art performance was funded by the NEA at alternative art spaces which morphed into musical performances by bands formed by art students and young suburban kids who were just bored and pissed off. Clothes were hand made, records made in basements and record covers hand drawn and hand distributed and mailed out. There was no social media, internet , Facebook, email, Twitter, YouTube or anything like that. Posters/flyers were the medium to announce an event or show. Word of mouth and hand made posters plastered on telephone poles and sides of buildings were the media.
Target Video was there from the beginning. With a large black-and-white camera and reel-to-reel video tape the Target Video crew set out to document the new medium of performance and music, poetry. They even had a cable TV. Show once a week broadcast out of San Francisco way before MTV aired.
As the movement developed, Target traveled to Europe and New York to build on their already extensive footage documented in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. History was in the making.
Getting bands to agree to being video taped was an exercise in itself which is where Jill Hoffman-Kowal and Jackie Sharp were very instrumental. Editing with montages, camera work and acquiring the equipment was Joe Rees' s specialty. Joe Rees is the founder of Target Video and Jill Hoffman-Kowal is the co-founder. Together with the addition of Jackie Sharp, history was made.
