2012-08-04
ALEXANDRIA, VA, August 04, 2012 (Press-News.org) The Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), the world's largest provider of state-of-the-art, early intensive behavioral intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, will host a CARD Virginia School open house for families of children with autism spectrum disorders, educators, therapists, and school administrators on August 15th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and August 16th from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at 5400 Shawnee Road, Ste. 208, in Alexandria. Families will have the opportunity to tour the school, meet with staff and teachers, and register their children for the 2012-2013 school year.

CARD founded CARD Virginia School in 2011 with the mission to provide an academic program built on excellence. CARD Virginia School offers a unique program to students 3 to 12 years of age with a one-to-one student-teacher ratio. Students receive approximately 215 days of instruction per year. The curriculum is based on the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), which has been empirically proven to be the most effective treatment for individuals with ASD and is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Surgeon General.

"Our teachers are Board Certified Behavior Analysts and certified educators who have years of experience treating and teaching children with autism spectrum disorders. We are confident that the unique needs of each student are met, enabling them to perform consistently at their peak," says Managing Supervisor Mary Ann Cassell, MA, BCBA.

CARD Virginia School is a Private Special Education Day School licensed by the Virginia Department of Education. Its curriculum is based on the Virginia Department of Education standards and is enhanced by CARD's Web-based program called Skills which assesses each student's skills and any challenging behaviors that may impede a child's overall functioning and ability to learn. Once an assessment is completed, Skills designs an individualized curriculum to address development in eight main areas: academic, play, executive, cognition, social, motor, language and adaptive skills. Skills is being used by schools across the country, including the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation's second largest school district.
