Bus Crashes Becoming a Routine Occurrence in Toronto's Daily Commute

If you or someone you love has been involved in a bus or streetcar accident, you need to take a look at some of the latest facts from the Toronto Transit Commission.

August 30, 2012

Public transportation can save you time, money and aggravation -- that is, if it gets you to your destination in one piece. In Toronto, the rash of bus and railcar accidents over the past year seriously calls into question the certainty of that prospect.

On August 2, the latest major bus incident culminated with charges of careless driving and failure to stop at a red light for the 55-year-old driver. According to Toronto police, the bus struck a Nissan Altima in the intersection of Peter and Richmond streets before hitting a southbound taxi and careening into a beloved local coffee shop.

Startling Numbers: Over Eight Collisions A Day for TCC Vehicles

The recent bus crash is by no means an isolated incident. In late July, the Toronto Transit Commission released accident data covering the period from April 2011 to April 2012. In one year, TTC recorded a stunning 3,015 surface collisions among its fleet of buses and streetcars. Averaged out, that's more than eight collisions a day.

1,583 of those incidents involved buses striking some other vehicle, and 587 involved a streetcar hitting a vehicle. But motorists weren't the only ones at risk from errant bus drivers: Toronto buses also struck 33 cyclists and 55 pedestrians between April 2011 and April 2012. Most of the remaining collisions involved fixed objects, like buildings or signs.

If You've Been in a Transit Accident, You May Be Entitled to Compensation for Injuries

Bus and streetcar accidents can have a wide range of causes. Improper vehicle maintenance, deficient operator training, the effect of drugs or alcohol, or just plain old operator error may be to blame.

Whether you were using public transportation when an accident occurred, or were injured in a transit accident as a motorist, pedestrian or bicyclist, you have a right to compensation from those at fault. An attorney with a public transit accident practice can help you resolve injury claims against the TTC or other transit authorities quickly and effectively.
