To address these questions and others, WorkBoat.com has scheduled a September 11 webinar at 1 p.m. (EDT). The cost to attend the webinar is $59. To register, visit www.WorkBoat.com.
"Through case studies, this session will provide a general overview on techniques and practices for driving business intelligence from AIS data," commented David Krapf, editor in chief WorkBoat magazine.
Krapf noted that fleet operators are well-acquainted with AIS for navigation and collision-avoidance. "In recent years shoreside users have used AIS to enhance business activities," Krapf said. "Shoreside benefits of AIS span a variety of applications including market intelligence, training, compliance, customer service, and even litigation avoidance."
Jason Tieman, Director of Maritime Solutions, PortVision, and Dean Rosenberg, President, PortVision, are the featured speakers for the webinar. The session will be focused case studies, not on a specific product or service.

How Corneal Issues Can Affect Your LASIK Candidacy
2012-09-08
Your cornea is a remarkable structure in that it is the transparent outer layer of your eye and in a healthy state has no blood vessels. It is one of your body's most delicate and sensitive areas, but heals rapidly. The cornea's curvature focuses light as it enters your eye. Further into the eye, your lens further focuses light to produce a clear image on your retina.
Although the lens can successfully change its curvature to focus on objects at different distances, your cornea cannot change its curvature. LASIK eye surgery works by altering the cornea's curvature, ...

Few people have ever heard of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of 1986, but a recent New York Times article brings to the fore questions asked by a federal magistrate judge about how certain provisions of the law are implemented.
Sadly, even a sitting federal judge had difficulty with the opacity of the act, which permits law enforcement authorities to obtain information on individual phone and email records with little or no showing of a crime or their reasons for the request.
Judge Stephen Smith, who handles the requests on a daily basis, from his ...

The Supreme Court came to the same conclusion as the lower courts and administrative judges involved in the case, explaining the decision on the grounds of legislative intent. The high court held that "the ...

How to Stop California Companies from Using Misappropriated Trade Secrets
2012-09-08
Everyone involved in the business world knows what a trade secret is and the immense value it can possess. However, the whole point of a trade secret is that a company derives value from the secret because it is just that, a secret. When a trade secret is misappropriated and/or made public, the trade secret not only loses value but the company risks losing the trade secret all together.
This begs the question, is there any relief available for a company after their trade secret is misappropriated? Is there any way to put the genie back in the bottle so other companies ...
