CHICAGO, IL, September 17, 2012 (Press-News.org) Federal safety regulators recently announced an updated workplace safety rule concerning the safe operation of construction site cranes and derricks. The aim of the updated Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA) rule is "to protect employees from the hazards associated with hoisting equipment when used to perform construction activities."
Crane and derrick injuries are common in construction site accidents in Chicago and across the country. Construction workers can suffer career-ending personal injuries from crane accidents, including spinal cord injuries and head trauma.
Crane accidents are just one type of common construction accident case handled by the Chicago law firm of Goldberg Weisman Cairo. The personal injury attorneys at GWC have represented seriously injured Illinois construction workers since 1978 and routinely obtain large verdicts and settlements on behalf of construction workers and their families.
In one crane accident case, the attorneys at GWC were able to secure a $2.66 million settlement for the family of an electrician killed at a construction site. The electrician's wrongful death happened when a 26,000-pound generator was being hoisted by a crane in an unsafe manner. The generator fell on the electrician after one of the nylon straps holding it tore.
In addition to crushing injuries, other common crane accident injuries include broken bones and blunt force trauma from loose equipment or worker falls. It is important that Chicago employers follow OSHA rules regarding the safe operation of cranes to prevent these injuries.
The updated OSHA rule regarding cranes and derricks applies to both demolition work and underground construction. Generally, employers are allowed to use cranes to carry construction workers to underground jobsites through shafts without the need to show that other means of access are more hazardous or impossible. Federal regulators say that safety rules regarding cranes in demolition and underground construction work will prevent 175 nonfatal injuries and 22 fatal injuries every year.
