New Hope for Arizona Childhood Cancer Patients

A special license plate brings awareness and funding...

PHOENIX, AZ, September 20, 2012

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month and Ella's Tea Party is pleased to announce the long-awaited Childhood Cancer Research license plate. Arizona motorists starting this week can purchase the plate and proceeds stay in Arizona for research and funding of childhood cancer treatments.

Beginning September 24th, Arizona vehicle owners may purchase the plates online at http://www.ServiceArizona.com or order their plate at any MVD or Authorized MVD Third Party office. The plate will cost $25 annually, and $17 of that fee will fund childhood cancer research projects right here at home.

ELLA'S STORY

"This has been a 4-year personal journey in the making," commented Lyndon Vidrine, Ella's Tea Party's founder. "We didn't realize how much childhood cancer could impact a family until our own 19-month old daughter, Ella, was diagnosed with a rare childhood liver cancer. Before that, it was always some picture in a television ad. After Ella's diagnosis, we learned just how many families are struck with this illness, how difficult new treatments are to fund for children, and how differently children respond to treatment than adults. We also learned how little funding is available to fund childhood cancer researchers' work. We were determined to join the fight and help researchers."

Today, one in five children diagnosed with cancer succumb to the disease, making cancer the number one non-violent cause of death in children. Each year in the US, more than 12,000 children are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer develops much differently in children and their bodies respond much differently to treatment. Many of today's treatments are based on chemotherapy agents developed many decades ago that can be toxic to young patients. Couple these factors with the fact that many rare cancers are found only in children, researchers struggle to develop safer, more effective treatments.

Ella's Tea Party, Inc. is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization conceived by friends and family of Ella Rose Vidrine, a special little girl who is fighting the greatest fight of her life. At just 19 months of age she was diagnosed with a rare childhood liver cancer that had spread from her liver to her lungs. Through the support and encouragement of friends, family, and those who've heard her story, Ella is beating the odds and offers a story of hope for those facing catastrophic childhood illness. We believe more can and should be done to facilitate research efforts to find safer, more effective treatments for childhood cancer.
