Biller was honored at the fourth annual Leadership in the Law event hosted by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly on Sept. 19 at the Raleigh Marriott City Center at 500 Fayetteville St.
At Coats and Bennett, Biller counsels clients in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret litigation in courts throughout the United States. One such event at the Coats and Bennett offices featured David J. Kappos, undersecretary of commerce for intellectual property and director of USPTO, reviewing patent practice in the United States, with a particular emphasis on patent litigation. Another was a discussion on patents and the economy and AIA implementation with two other USPTO officials which was hosted at Campbell Law School, featuring Dr. Stuart Graham, the chief economist at USPTO, and Janet Gongola, implementation coordinator for the America Invents Act.
Biller's memberships include the American Bar Association (ABA) litigation and intellectual property practice groups, the International Trademark Association, and the Federalist Society. He is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the Alliance Defense Fund's National Litigation Honor Corps. Biller chaired both the ABA's Intellectual Property Law Committee on Trademark Litigation and Committee on Trademarks and the Internet, each for two annual terms. He was named to the North Carolina Business "Legal Elite" for Intellectual Property in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Biller also serves on the board of directors for and provides pro bono legal advice to several ministries with intellectual property needs.
Prior to practicing law, Biller served four years as an officer in the U.S. Army where, as a Jumpmaster and Ranger, he led paratroopers in the 82nd Airborne Division. He received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University, where he was a Distinguished Military Graduate, and his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Campbell University in 1997, where he served as the managing editor for the Campbell Law Review. In his personal time, Biller has served as chief of the Twirling Tulips tribe in the YMCA Guide/Indian Princess Program and as a Cub Scout Den Leader. He coaches soccer teams at Colonial Baptist Church and enjoys competing in triathlons.
