Richard Liloia Reacts to Lichtenstein Collection at Tate Modern
In an effort to highlight the artistic skill that pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, London's Tate Modern has announced its plan to host a retrospective of his works. Richard Liloia comments on the exhibit and his interpretation of Lichtenstein.

According to a recent article from The Guardian, the Tate Modern of London, famed modern art museum, has announced plans to host an extensive retrospective on the works of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. Although Lichtenstein has become well-known for his contributions of comic-style paintings and "dotting" technique, the article explains that the intention of the exhibit is to show the wider range of skills that Lichtenstein brought to the table. As a painter and pop art aficionado, Richard Liloia of Seattle responds to this new exhibit in hopes that more people will explore pop art in a deeper, analytical manner.Richard Liloia explains, "Although the words 'Roy Lichtenstein' are often a broken record in the art world, I think it is important that the general public become more aware of his diverse set of skills. The way Roy Lichtenstein has become widely associated with his comic-style painting is very similar to that of the public's interpretation of Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol has become commonly associated with his Campbell soup can paintings and celebrity-inspired pieces; however, he has some very intriguing work in both video production and photography that is rarely discussed."
According the article, Tate Modern curators aim to bring a wider interpretation of Lichtenstein, and have chosen "the most comprehensive" collection of his to be displayed. The article explains that the exhibit will include "125 of his paintings and sculptures, as well as rarely seen drawings from a career that spanned more than 50 years." As a fan of pop art, Richard Liloia explains that this diverse set of artwork is important to display so that the public can "integrate their perceptions of pop art in the entire fabric of artistic movements." He states, "With this exhibit, patrons will see pop art as not just bright colors and clean lines--they will see an artist's complete understanding of creative approaches."
Although Richard Liloia remains a dietician by day, his side hobby of painting has turned into one that has drawn some attention. He explains, "I have done a few art shows, and some in the art community have come to appreciate my painting abilities. However, I hate being boxed into just the 'painter' category. Sometimes, I like to work in other mediums, and would like to one day focus on those as well. I think the work of Roy Lichtenstein highlights this issue that affects a great majority of artists."
