Traffic Deaths Decreasing in Texas

Texas traffic accidents are leading to a decrease in deaths throughout the state.

2012-10-14
October 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) Texas drivers know how dangerous the nation's highways can be. Fortunately, a recent report shows that traffic deaths in Texas are decreasing.

The data comes from a state audit of the Texas Department of Transportation. It reveals that traffic deaths throughout the state have decreased 15 percent since 2006.

Texas reports around 1.29 deaths per 100 million miles driven in 2010. In 2006, the number was 1.5 and has decreased each year since. A 21 percent total decrease is reported since 2003.

In 2009, Texas was ranked as the 16th most dangerous state for drivers. Montana was listed as the most dangerous state, with 2.01 deaths per 100 million miles driven. The safest state was Massachusetts, reporting only 0.61 deaths per 100 million miles.

Despite these positive numbers, Texas still reports higher numbers than the country as a whole. On a national level, 1.11 deaths per 100 million miles were reported in 2010.

TxDOT officials say this is potentially because other states have stricter laws relating to distracted driving. A bill banning texting while driving was vetoed in Texas last year. Traffic safety advocates say the numbers can be lowered with changes in driver behavior.

A number of factors contribute to traffic deaths. Drunk driving and distracted driving are two of the most common. Others include speeding, running red lights, and drowsy driving.

Numerous traffic deaths occurred throughout the state over the summer. In July, a driver was killed near San Marcos after losing control of the vehicle and slamming into an 18-wheeler carrying trucks. Another fatal accident occurred in the same month when a pregnant woman and her two sons were killed in a head on collision.

Fewer traffic deaths are a recent national trend. New safety features on vehicles such as airbags help lower the numbers. Additionally, educational campaigns focused on the dangers of drunk driving and distracted driving are contributing factors.

Drivers are also using seat belts more frequently. Officials from TxDOT note that a campaign promoting seat belt usage has increased belt usage in the state by 94 percent.

In August, TxDOT began displaying the current numbers of traffic related deaths on highway message boards throughout the state. The messages are shown on more than 700 signs for one week each month. They hope this will bring attention to the importance of careful driving and encourage residents to drive more safely.

An individual injured in a traffic accident due to the negligent driving of another may be entitled to compensation. An experienced personal injury attorney can provide knowledge and guidance as well as assist with obtaining any available compensation.

"Stop, Question and Frisk" is a policy of the New York City Police Department. It allows police officers to stop and search people on ...
