Record Settlement Reached in Cook County Slip and Fall Case

CHICAGO, IL, October 14, 2012

Illinois attorneys Sean P. Murray and Melanie J. Sims of Anesi, Ozmon, Rodin, Novak & Kohen Ltd. recently negotiated the highest personal injury settlement for an individual over the age of 90 years old in Cook County.

The case settled for $1,375,000 after the completion of written discovery, party depositions and preparation for physician depositions. The case arose from a slip and fall injury that occurred in a building lobby where no warning signs indicated a wet floor.

On December 12, 2011, Irving Letwin slipped on a freshly mopped floor while leaving his condo building. Surveillance video showed that a custodian mopped the area and then walked away without placing any warning signs. Letwin fractured his femur and was taken to the hospital. During the hospital stay, he suffered a stroke. After a transfer to a nursing home, his condition got worse and he passed away in June 2012.

Letwin was 95 years old at the time of accident. He lived independently and enjoyed walks along Michigan Avenue with his wife.

The settlement will allow Letwin's widow security and peace of mind following the accident and rapid deterioration of her husband. It will also provide her funds so that she can live the rest of her life without worrying over finances.
