VANCOUVER, BC, October 18, 2012 (Press-News.org) Dr. Tad Pfeffer, a well-known researcher in glaciology, sea level rise, and geophysics, has been awarded a three year grant that will allow him to expand his study of glaciers on behalf of the University of Colorado and the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR). The grant, made by Eos Systems, provides three years of photogrammetry software and technical assistance for Dr. Pfeffer and his team, who are studying the world's glaciers as barometers of climate change.
Photogrammetry is the science of extracting data and measurements from photographs. Eos Systems' PhotoModeler is a popular software application for photogrammetric use.
"Our work on glacier mapping requires efficient and precise mapping options that are flexible and can be deployed at low cost. PhotoModeler provides an easy-to-learn and highly adaptable platform for terrestrial photogrammetry, and has been a critical tool in many of our field operations", says Dr. Pfeffer. "Eos Systems' grant support of PhotoModeler licences will allow us to expand our terrestrial photogrammetry activities in Alaska and Svalbard by allowing more students and colleagues to participate in our research with additional Photomodeler seats".
Alan Walford, CEO and Founder of Eos Systems Inc. says, "We have worked with Professor Pfeffer for a number of years and have always been impressed by his work. Glacial monitoring is very important to understanding climate change, and we're very pleased to support his work with this grant."
The PhotoModeler software product is a versatile tool for performing accurate measurement from images and photos. It is very practical for field use due to the portability and low cost of standard digital cameras. Photogrammetric measurement is an extremely useful technique for glaciers and other types of remote field operations. Additional information can be found at www.photomodeler.com.
About Tad Pfeffer and INSTAAR
For the past 30 years Dr. Pfeffer has studied the mechanics of how glaciers move and change in response to climate, using physics, math and engineering. He is a professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a fellow of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR). INSTAAR (Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, instaar.colorado.edu), part of the University of Colorado Boulder, conducts earth and environmental system and global change research.
