PASADENA, CA, October 14, 2010 (Press-News.org) Labor Department's latest jobs report has shown that 95,000 jobs were lost in September, but economists and companies are still talking about structural unemployment.
The hardest hits have been construction workers and people who were in retail jobs. Even people who were working in manufacturing industries are finding out that they need additional certifications such as "Six Sigma", an efficiency raising management practice, to be hired back. Manufacturers advertised over 200,000 jobs by the end of August, but most of the positions have gone unfilled.
In the private sector, most of the jobs were created in the leisure and hospitality industry (38,000 jobs) and healthcare (32,000 jobs). But the layoffs of 159,000 workers in the state and local government organizations created an overall negative jobs scenario.
CEO A. Harrison Barnes of Hound believes that although some hi-tech industries may be having a hard time getting enough qualified employees, this is not the case in most industries. "Employers are looking for workers who can multitask, and this is true across all industries. And computer skills are absolutely essential no matter which industry you are in.
Hound is a job search engine that has been able to find a total of over 87,000 jobs posted on employer websites so far. The company expects more job postings in the next few days as the retail chains announce their plans for this holiday season.
