NEWARK, NJ, November 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, has become a household word. Literally millions of children are diagnosed with this disorder in the United States. Clinical psychologist and author Susan Ashley, PhD states that when hear the word ADHD, what usually follows is the word, medication. That is because up to 80% of children and teens diagnosed with ADHD will at some point be medicated.
The medications most commonly used to treat ADHD are stimulants. Ritalin is a well-known and somewhat controversial medication used to treat ADHD, and there are numerous other medications used in treating ADHD; most are amphetamine stimulants. (Ritalin is not a true amphetamine, but similar).
Many parents, and many teachers, are concerned about giving young children amphetamines. Side effects of stimulant medications can be serious, and despite the reassurances of pharmaceutical manufacturers, there can, in fact, be very serious side effects to stimulant medications of all types. Serious side effects affect the majority of children who use medicines used to treat ADHD.
What can be done to help children overcome symptoms of ADHD without medication? There is much that parents can do to help their children to overcome symptoms of ADHD without drugs. These tested ideas are presented in the book Overcoming ADHD Without Medication.
The book is now available online, in bookstores and in ebook format. It is also now available in Spanish under the title, Superar el Trastorno por Deficit de Atención con Hiperactividad (TDAH) Sin Medicación: Guía para Padres y Educadores, translated by Cynthia Lorena.
