NEW YORK, NY, November 20, 2012 (Press-News.org) South Asian Music and Arts Association (SAMAA) announces a classical Indian music concert at the NYU Skirball Center, December 9.
Iconic Carnatic-style violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam and Hindustani-style vocalist Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam will perform together in concert; they will be accompanied by Mahesh Krishnamurti, Anirban Roy Chowdhary and Rohan Prabhu Desai, playing the mridangam, tabla and harmonium, respectively. The concert will close with Jon Weber on keyboard, presenting a fusion of Hindustani, Carnatic and western music.
Dr. Subramaniam, an erstwhile child prodigy, Grammy nominated and winner of many awards including Padmabhushan, Padma Shri and GIMA, is now an outstanding classical violinist and orchestral composer, renowned for his virtuoso playing techniques and compositions in orchestral fusion. He has worked with prominent western musicians, including Yehudi Menuhin and Ravi Coltrane, and has composed for some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic. He was the featured soloist for Little Buddha and Cotton Mary of Merchant-Ivory Productions and has performed with Stevie Wonder at the General Assembly. The Los Angeles Times described Subramaniam as "a peerless virtuoso...(whose) poetic imagination formed inexhaustible permutations."
Vocalist Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam is trained in Hindustani classical music and is well known as a playback singer; she has received the Padma Shri (the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India) and four Filmfare Best Female Playback awards. She has also sung as a soloist with many orchestras and has performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the Lincoln Center and Madison Square Garden in New York.
SAMAA is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the promotion of music and arts from South Asia through live performances, education and advocacy.
"Our goal is to keep the music alive for future generations and spread South Asian arts and music throughout the western world," says executive director Simmi Bhatia. "Changing times demand a diverse and innovative approach and we are promoting classical Indian music in the USA through concerts and lectures."

We're in this together: A pathbreaking investigation into the evolution of cooperative behavior
2012-11-19
Humans are much more inclined to cooperate than are their closest evolutionary relatives. The prevailing wisdom about why this is true has long been focused on the idea of altruism: we go out of our way to do nice things for other people, sometimes even sacrificing personal success for the good of others. Modern theories of cooperative behavior suggest that acting selflessly in the moment provides a selective advantage to the altruist in the form of some kind of return benefit.

Immune cells known as microglia, which were isolated from the brains of HD mice, as well as immune cells from the peripheral blood were found to be defective ...
