RALEIGH, NC, November 22, 2012 (Press-News.org) Robert Macia, PE, LEED AP, president of Stewart (http://www.stewartinc.com), one of the largest engineering and landscape architecture design firms in North Carolina, has announced that the firm has received a 2012 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the National Council of Structural Engineering Associations (NCSEA). Stewart was recognized at NCSEA's 20th Annual Conference in St. Louis, Mo. in the category for "New Buildings Under $10 Million" for its work on the Buckner Companies Home Office project in Graham, N.C.
Stewart provided structural engineering services for the Buckner Companies Home Office, a project serving as the headquarters for the N.C.-based steel erector and crane rental provider. The 12,000-square-foot, one-of-a-kind project used existing materials from Buckner Companies' "boneyard," composed of salvaged structural pieces from projects that have been recovered and stored by Buckner over the last 62 years. The building's conference room was built from girders recovered from a renovation of Clemson University's Littlejohn Coliseum, and a connecting bridge, originally erected by Buckner in 1972 on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, was re-erected at the office headquarters to connect the new building with existing buildings. The building's roof and south-facing clerestory was created by pairs of wood glue laminated beams salvaged from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport Terminal 2 Project.
QUOTES:
"We are incredibly honored to be recognized by the National Council of Structural Engineers Association for our work on the Buckner Companies Home Office project," said Macia. "The Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards recognizes creative achievement and innovation in structural engineering, and we are proud to be an award winner among some of the most inventive and pioneering engineering firms in the nation. The Buckner Companies Home Office project was truly a one-of-a-kind project that allowed us to reuse old materials, which helped us cut back on labor, material and production costs while still achieving a remarkably sustainable and aesthetically pleasing home-base for one of the nation's leading steel-erector and crane rental providers."
DETAILS:
- The total budget and actual cost for the project totaled $3 million.
- The headquarters was designed to highlight Buckner Companies' past projects and show clients and visitors the crucial role that structural steel plays in building and design.
- In total, 83 tons of steel were used in the building and nearly 40 percent of the materials were reused from the Buckner Companies' "boneyard."
