In America, Hollywood stars often serve as role models and trend-setters, especially those who approach the public with attractive looks and charm. In fact, many celebrities set the standard of what is popularly accepted in terms of aging and beauty. While most Americans may think that starlets are a major force behind plastic surgery trends, a recent article from The Hollywood Reporter reveals that these options are also growing more popular among the male set of actors. While many men are noted to be more private about this practice, Dr. Alavi--Head Cosmetic Surgeon and Medical Director of San Diego's Center for Cosmetic Surgery--explains that cosmetic procedures among male patients is becoming more prevalent, even for those who are not subjected to the red carpet.According to The Hollywood Reporter the denial of plastic surgery among male celebrities is so common that, "Outside of Mickey Rourke (age 60), who had to admit to his flagrant face- and cheek-lifts meant to repair early boxing blows, virtually no male actor--not even Rupert Everett--has confessed to submitting to knife or needle." However, the article also notes that some men are not ashamed to admit that they pursue touch-ups every so often. For example, Simon Cowell has previously stated, "Botox is no more unusual than toothpaste."
While the article addresses the fact that men face different challenges when it comes to face lifts--such as hiding scars when the patient is bald--Dr. Alavi explains that the trend in male plastic surgery should cause no patient to feel ashamed about pursuing these practices. Dr. Alavi adds, "In the past few years we have seen a substantial increase in men requesting some form of plastic surgery. Presently over 25 percent of our patients are men. Most men are very much concerned with their looks and plastic surgery has been accepted as an adjunct to their exercise and diet."
Dr. Alavi notes that the reasons for men to pursue plastic surgery are diverse. For instance, some may want to "match" the visible age of their partner, while others may seek cosmetic procedures to improve presence in the workplace. In agreement with the professional opinions outlined in the article, Dr. Alavi suggests that many men may want to contemplate options that allow them to retain some signs of aging, such as a few wrinkles, to provide a more realistic result. Alavi concludes by noting that all men considering plastic surgery should fully research procedures before making a decision.
