Leading Local Beer Distributor Provides Advice On How To Consume Alcohol Responsibly During Seasonal Celebrations

RALEIGH, NC, December 20, 2012 (Press-News.org) Mims Distributing Company (http://www.mimsdistributing.com), a beer distributor servicing a nine-county area in and around the Triangle, has announced a list of tips for consumers to keep in mind as they plan to attend winter parties and enjoy beer as part of their holiday and New Year's celebrations. These items include:

1. Know the ABV of your beer.

ABV stands for alcohol by volume. The number represents what portion of the total volume of liquid is alcohol. It is listed as a total percentage of volume on most beer cans and bottles, and most beers lie within the 4 to 6 percent range. Light beers generally have lower ABV numbers (down to 2 percent in some cases), but it is important to know that some beers can go up to 15 percent ABV legally in North Carolina. Drinks with low ABV numbers introduce less alcohol into the bloodstream, meaning that you can consume more of them than those with high ABVs before feeling the effects of being inebriated.

2. Check on the serving size.

When people mention how low alcohol consumption is a prudent approach to stay sober, they often fail to consider how the amount served in different sizes of containers varies substantially. A 12-ounce beer is regarded as one standard drink, whereas a 22-ounce beer is considered two drinks. Have two of the latter rather than a pair of 12-ounce bottles, and your alcohol intake is not only double in comparison, but you are reaching the point where you may be legally intoxicated. Keeping the first point in mind, a 12-ounce serving of a 10 percent ABV beer will have more alcohol than a 12-ounce serving of a 4 percent ABV beer.

3. Plan your transportation/designated driver in advance.

People should never drive a car when intoxicated. Go with a friend who agrees not to imbibe alcohol at a party if the opportunity exists where you may exceed your legal limit and need him or her to drive instead. If you feel the effects of alcohol consumption at a party and have no designated driver, take a taxi or find other alternative transportation to arrive at your residence safely. Drinking slows your reflexes, which are already impaired by low visibility when driving at night. It is never worth risking your life or those of anyone you may hit by driving drunk.

4. Know your limit for alcohol consumption and keep an eye out for friends who are also drinking.

Drink in moderation the way you do any other day of the year. Eat food, particularly high-protein options such as cheese and peanuts, to help to slow the absorption of alcohol into your circulatory system. Between each time you have a glass, bottle or can of beer, drink a non-alcoholic beverage. Watch out for friends who may be consuming alcohol excessively, and make sure they are safe and do not drink and drive. These simple techniques will allow you to enjoy both your social setting and drinks with alcohol without putting yourself in jeopardy.

5. If a lot of beer options are available, drink sample sizes instead of full glasses of each.

Some hosts of parties take pride in offering you their selection of brews to enjoy. While the temptation to indulge may be strong, ask for just enough to sip any of them, and eat food or drink some water to cleanse your palate between tastings and pace yourself. Sample sizes will give you the option to try a greater number of beers without increasing your risk of over-consuming. Above all else, remember there is no need to try everything at one setting - the brands will be available for you to locate and taste well after the party ended.
