NY Eye Doctors on Glaucoma Risks & Exams for Early Diagnosis to Prevent Vision Loss

Age is important-once we enter our 40's, the risk of glaucoma begins to increase-and once we reach the age of 60 the risk of glaucoma increases by 4-9 times, even without any family history or medical issues. If you also have either systemic or eye diseases that challenge circulation-such as diabetes this can further increase your risk," explained Dr. Wolter. "Another important factor that increases glaucoma risk is race. The African-American population seems to be 6-8 times at greater risk and Hispanics over 60 years of age also are more prone to developing glaucoma."
