POUGHKEEPSIE, NY, January 08, 2013 (Press-News.org) "In consideration of Prevent Blindness America designating January as National Glaucoma Awareness Month, on behalf of the eye doctors and staff at Seeta Eye Centers we wanted to provide useful patient information about glaucoma risks and the need to have regular eye exams with glaucoma evaluations in order to avoid vision loss through early detection, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma," stated Satish Modi, M.D. "The most recent data tells us that over 2.8 million people over the of age 40 suffer from the most common type of glaucoma called primary open-angle glaucoma. This is considerable as it reflects a 22 percent increase since 2000," commented Dr. Modi.
"What I constantly advise patients is that the critical element in managing glaucoma risk and avoiding vision loss from glaucoma is to be consistent in having regular eye exams at the time intervals recommended by your eye doctor," said Andreas Wolter, M.D. a NY Ophthalmologist at Seeta Eye Centers. "We know that everyone is at risk for glaucoma but that certain factors can increase that risk-and patients should keep them in mind. Age is important-once we enter our 40's, the risk of glaucoma begins to increase-and once we reach the age of 60 the risk of glaucoma increases by 4-9 times, even without any family history or medical issues. If you also have either systemic or eye diseases that challenge circulation-such as diabetes this can further increase your risk," explained Dr. Wolter. "Another important factor that increases glaucoma risk is race. The African-American population seems to be 6-8 times at greater risk and Hispanics over 60 years of age also are more prone to developing glaucoma."
"Patients should be reassured that we are here to help them with in office advanced technology diagnostic tools such as ocular coherence tomography (OCT) testing-somewhat like an CT scan of the optic nerve, better eye drops for glaucoma, excellent laser treatments and new glaucoma surgery techniques that use microscopic glaucoma stents to reduce eye pressure when we perform bladeless cataract surgery. The advances in glaucoma treatment and cataract surgery have been great," summarized Dr. Modi.

Motorists Need to Be Cautious When Driving Near New San Jose Bike Lanes
2013-01-08
If you've been traveling around San Jose, you may have noticed some new lanes on local streets. These lanes are part of an enhanced green bikeways project approved by the San Jose City Council, with construction to continue in 2013. This project is meant to get more cyclists on the streets, slow down traffic by eliminating motor vehicle lanes, and ultimately make the city safer for both cyclists and pedestrians. But, as some of the new bike lanes replace vehicle lanes, drivers who are not up to date on the latest developments could be at risk of causing bicycle accidents.

Nap Nanny Baby Recliners Pegged As Dangerous Product, Thousands Recalled
2013-01-08
In late December, four national retailers agreed to recall more than 150,000 Nap Nanny baby recliners in light of reports that the items had caused at least five infant deaths. Designed to cradle young children while they slept, the foam recliners apparently did not feature an effective restraint system, and it was discovered that infants could easy fall over the side.
On December 27, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced their finding that Nap Nanny seats, which were sold between 2009 and 2012, pose a "substantial risk of injury and death to infants." ...
Minnesota Department of Public Safety Cracks Down on Holiday Drunk Driving
2013-01-08
The colder season is filled with holiday festivities. It is tradition for Minnesotans to partake in the merriment of Thanksgiving get-togethers, Christmas parties and New Year's Eve celebrations. The holidays are a time to reunite with old friends and family. However, along with many of these festivities comes the spirit of overindulgence: plenty of gifts, an assortment of rich foods, and in many instances, one too many alcoholic beverages.
In the month of December 2012, Minnesota's Department of Public Safety reported that approximately 1,300 people had been arrested ...

In late 2012, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released a report compiling all the latest data on occupational injuries and illnesses. Unsurprisingly, those working in certain occupations were far more likely to suffer from a workplace injury.
Injury rates largely unchanged
For every 10,000 full time employees working in 2011, 117 suffered a nonfatal occupational injury or illness that required days away from work ...

According to The Mankato Free Press, sex offenders are confined to high-security treatment facilities at an annual cost of approximately $120,000 per offender.
However, in December 2012, a federal ...
