Aussie Copper to Make History

An Australian man is planning to become the first person in recorded history to circumnavigate the Independent State of Samoa in a Hobie Adventure Island kayak, and he's doing it to raise funds and awareness for the prevention of youth suicide.

2013-01-23
APIA, SAMOA, January 23, 2013 (Press-News.org) Aussie police officer Andy Warton will make history this April by kayaking almost 400 kilometers solo around Samoa.

In 90 days from now Andy will circumnavigate the Independent State of Samoa as part of Kayak4Youth to raise money and awareness for the prevention of youth suicide and mental illness. "A few years ago, within a short space of time, I lost two friends to suicide, one of whom I was particularly close to", says Andy.

"So to me it made sense to combine my kayak adventure with support for a worthy social cause and it was then Kayak4Youth was born". Andy's voyage mirrors the key message of Kayak4Youth - 'sometimes you may be by yourself, but you are never alone'.

"My challenge is a metaphor for the journey many young people are undertaking in their personal lives - while life has its uncertainties there are many opportunities out there as well", he says. Funds raised from Andy's challenge will be donated to Samoa's only counselling service and Lifeline - Faataua Le Ola (FLO).

"Here in Samoa the effects of tropical Cyclone Evan are still being felt by many of the people," says Andy. "Watching how the staff at FLO have been helping these people has been very humbling and is a timely reminder that my journey is more important now than it's ever been before."

Andy's journey is being recorded by a team of filmmakers who are aiming to produce a feature length documentary about the journey and the issues of suicide and mental illness.

Alcohol/Drugs and Car Accidents

2013-01-23
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists drug and alcohol use as a common cause of car accidents. NHTSA research has found that 28 people are killed by intoxicated drivers every day in the United States, but a majority of drunken driving accidents occur over the weekend. Everyone knows that driving while intoxicated is dangerous, yet many studies have found a majority of adults admit to having done it despite laws prohibiting such things. Indeed, when caught, an intoxicated driver can face stiff penalties, but criminal charges do nothing for those ...

How Wrongful Death Damages are Distributed

2013-01-23
When a family loses a loved one in an accident, more than one member will be impacted. Damages may be financial and emotional, with both short and long-term consequences, but determining what each family member is entitled to can result in discord and drive a wedge between surviving family members. Fortunately, families do not need to determine how damages will be distributed. Damages in wrongful death lawsuits are divided equally among beneficiaries according to the order of the probate court. Seeking Legal Help To ensure every member of your family receives the ...

Will Illinois Be the Next State to Legalize Medical Marijuana?

2013-01-23
During the 2012 election, supporters of relaxed marijuana laws saw huge gains. Residents in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia voted to permit the use of medical marijuana, joining a group of 17 states that have already passed such laws. Colorado and Washington even went as far as to allow the use of marijuana for recreational purposes. Illinois may be next. State lawmakers have been seriously discussing the prospect of legalizing medical marijuana. According to the Marijuana Policy Project, a national group that lobbies for the reform of marijuana laws, a vote ...

Thinking About a "Do-it-Yourself" Divorce in Texas? Proceed With Caution

2013-01-23
The Texas Supreme Court recently approved a boilerplate form that would allow couples seeking an uncontested divorce the ability to file the paperwork themselves. The forms are similar to those offered in many other states, and are designed to primarily assist lower-income couples whose marriages have broken down. The theory is good: provide a step-by-step process where the parties can plug information into the form and walk away with a divorce decree that a family court judge would then sign and make enforceable. The execution of that idea, though, is one that is fraught ...

2013-01-23
Many drivers sadly continue to make the mistake of concentrating too much on their cellphones instead of keeping their eyes on the road - which is a mistake that can have deadly consequences. Here in Massachusetts, and throughout the country, lawmakers and police are doing their best to curb this epidemic, but tragically distracted driving and texting-while-driving accidents continue to occur. Fatal consequences of distracted driving According to statistics reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 3092 deaths and 416,000 ...
