North Carolina Symphony Announces 2012/2013 Summerfest Series

RALEIGH, NC, April 05, 2013 (Press-News.org) The North Carolina Symphony's popular outdoor concerts return for another season as the Rex Healthcare Summerfest Series brings thrilling music for relaxed listening to Cary's Booth Amphitheatre May 25 through July 6. This summer marks the 28th anniversary of performances in Cary and the orchestra's thirteenth season in the stunning lakeside pavilion built by the Town of Cary.

While performances begin at 7:30 p.m., concertgoers may bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs as early as 5:00 p.m. to enjoy the striking natural surroundings before the music begins. Children ages 12 and under are free on the lawn, so attending a North Carolina Symphony concert at Booth Amphitheatre is a wonderful summer bargain for families.

Some of music's most exciting offerings—as well as costume contests, instrument zoos for the kids, games, prizes, Fourth of July fireworks and so much more—make these evening performances under the pines a special treat for everyone in the family.

Summerfest Opening Night launches your summer of music on May 25, featuring Play with the Pros.* Enjoy the evening as the Triangle's most gifted citizen musicians of all ages join forces with Resident Conductor and Summerfest Artistic Director William Henry Curry and the North Carolina Symphony in a robust evening of classical masterpieces, including Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D Major, plus Ferdinand Herold's Zampa Overture, Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite, and Jean Sibelius' Finlandia.

The Symphony's summer celebration continues on Saturday, June 1, with At the Movies. Join Grant Llewellyn for a special performance of music from some of the greatest movies of all time, including the James Bond films, "Out of Africa," "Indiana Jones," "Pirates of the Caribbean," and "Gone With The Wind." And, the Symphony is hosting a costume contest for folks who come dressed as their favorite movie character, with a chance to win free Summerfest tickets, and more. Lights! Action! Music!

Back by popular demand, the orchestra will host the "Fab Four" as part of the Classical Mystery Tour, which celebrates the 45th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' White Album. On Saturday, June 8, guest conductor Martin Herman will lead the North Carolina Symphony and the Classical Mystery Tour band in some of the greatest Beatles tunes ever, such as "I Am The Walrus," "Eleanor Rigby," and "Penny Lane," along with beautiful ballads such as "The Long and Winding Road" and "Yesterday." The Symphony guarantees that the audience will love it... yeah, yeah, yeah!

On Saturday, June 15, Maestro Curry and the orchestra will be joined by guest pianist Di Wu for Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Praised in the Wall Street Journal as "a most mature and sensitive pianist" and named one of the "up-and-coming talents" in classical music by Musical America, Chinese-born Di Wu continues to enhance her reputation as an elegant and powerful musician. Her concerts have taken her across the globe, charming audiences from East to West with her "charisma, steely technique, and keen musical intelligence" (Philadelphia Inquirer) and her "fire and authority" (Washington Post).

The concert on Saturday, June 22, will definitely have audiences leaving the concert humming. Join Maestro Curry and the orchestra for an evening of Broadway Blockbusters. Mega-hits such as "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables, and "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera, plus hits from Music Man and Fiddler on the Roof, and The Sound of Music are perfect for singing along!

The Symphony plays music that is out of this world on Saturday, June 29, when it performs Holst's The Planets: An HD Odyssey. Conductor William Henry Curry will guide listeners on the ultimate journey through the galaxy with Gustav Holst's symphonic powerhouse, The Planets, live with high definition images from NASA projected on a giant screen above the orchestra.

Summerfest's Finale will be held on Saturday, July 6, with a Classics Celebration. Some of music's greatest works will explode from the stage, including Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks, the Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah, featuring the Concert Singers of Cary, and Tchaikovsky's epic 1812 Overture. Ready...Aim...Play!

And, as always, on Thursday, July 4, at 7:30 p.m., the North Carolina Symphony will celebrate with the Town of Cary at a free Independence Day concert that is a salute to the Red, White, and Blue. A Triangle tradition, the concert will feature patriotic favorites and high-spirited classics to honor the USA on its birthday. Come early to Booth Amphitheatre and grab the best seats on the lawn for the area's biggest Fourth of July fireworks display.

About the North Carolina Symphony

Founded in 1932, the North Carolina Symphony performs over 175 concerts annually to adults and school children in more than 50 North Carolina counties.
