League of Women Voters of Bergen County to Hold Forum: Why County Police?

The League of Women Voters of Bergen County will hold a public forum to address the role of the Bergen County Police Department on April 9.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ, April 09, 2013 (Press-News.org) The League of Women Voters of Bergen County will hold a public forum to discuss the role of the Bergen County Police Department on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. The forum will be held in the auditorium of the Bergen County Community Service Building, located at 327 Ridgewood Avenue at the corner of Farview Avenue, in Paramus, New Jersey. The site offers ample, well lit parking.

A panel of police professionals will respond to the question, Why is the Bergen County Department of Police needed? Panelist Bergen County Police Chief Brian Higgins will review the history and mission of the county police and explain the broad scope of services that the Department of Public Safety provides. Other panelists will discuss the interaction between the municipal and county police; the teams of highly trained specialists who respond to special emergency situations within this county department; and the work of a school resource office, a term frequently heard in the news but not clearly understood.

The League of Women Voters was an outgrowth of the 19th amendment passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote. With over 800 local Leagues throughout the country, the organization gained prestige by maintaining its nonpartisanship; sponsoring candidates' forums for local, state and national elections; holding registration drives; disseminating nonpartisan information on candidates; and holding public meetings to discuss current issues. Membership is open to both men and women of voting age who support the organization's mission.
