According to Mary O'Brien Aurora, Candy Recall is Cause for Concern

Mary O'Brien Aurora, who owns The Aurora Treats Company, has issued a statement to the press regarding a salmonella recall that is impacting popular Easter-themed chocolates.

2013-04-10
PHILADELPHIA, PA, April 10, 2013 (Press-News.org) Mary O'Brien Aurora, founder of The Aurora Treats Company, is speaking out about a new article that details a salmonella scare that has prompted a recall on popular Easter treats. A new article from ABC News notes that an Indiana candy maker has recently recalled packages of its chocolate-covered marshmallow eggs, stating that the candies may contain salmonella.

Candy maker Zachary Confections announced the voluntary recall of its Easter treats after a sample taken during a routine test was deemed to have "the potential for salmonella contamination" according to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious, and sometimes deadly, infections in children and elderly individuals, as well as in those with weakened immune systems. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that the food borne bacterium kills roughly 400 people living in the United States each year.

Even healthy individuals are at risk for fever, pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting should they come into contact with salmonella. On rare occasions, the organism has been known to invade the bloodstream, thus leading to infections of the heart and arteries, as well as arthritis.

Mary O'Brien Aurora comments on this recall stating, "Though many food products are recalled each year, it's important that consumers take this action seriously. Discarding of the candies is the only way to ensure that salmonella-related illness will not occur."

The recall includes five-ounce packages of the Easter treats that are sold in white egg crates, featuring purple, green, and yellow lettering. The candies bear the product number 31-797 and have a best buy date of February 14, 2014. Packages went from the manufacturer's Frankfort, Indiana-based factory on February 21 and 22, 2013, and have been distributed to shops in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The team at Zachary Confections has yet to receive reports of sickness relating to the treats, but the FDA has still suspended production while it looks to find the cause of the potential contamination.

George Anichini, who is the Vice President of Operations for the company, states," We are dedicated to manufacturing wholesome products for our customers. Consistent with that dedication, we are taking this voluntary action."

The FDA advises all individuals who purchased the products to destroy them or to return them their place of purchase. Mary O'Brien Aurora notes that it is important that consumers remain aware of this recall, as well as similar recalls that may occur in the future.
