OJAI, CA, May 17, 2013 (Press-News.org) Laurel Springs School will be featured in the one-hour ASICS Easter Bowl television special, which will premiere on the Tennis Channel this Sunday, May 19, at 12:30 p.m. ET / 9:30 a.m. PT, and replayed later that evening at 12:30 a.m. ET (May 20) / 9:30 p.m. PT.
More than 60 Laurel Springs students took part in what some call the Super Bowl of junior tennis, and one of the four USTA National Grand Slam gold ball events. Several Laurel Springs students made it to the finals weekend of the tournament played at the Sunrise Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
One of the world's top International Tennis Federation junior tennis players, Noah Rubin of Rockville Centre, N.Y., was the top-seeded player in the Boys' 18s division and advanced all the way to the semifinals in singles. Rubin was interviewed by the Tennis Channel and will be included in a 30-second segment during the broadcast.
"I was thrilled to attend the Easter Bowl tennis tournament to support our students," said Laurel Springs School founder Marilyn Mosley Gordanier. "Our online school is committed to relationship-based education, and we receive great satisfaction from talking to our students and parents, counseling them on their college aspirations, and watching them compete. It is so fulfilling to observe our students following their passion: practicing daily and completing their schoolwork. Their efforts do not go unnoticed. We were very excited that four of our students made it to the semi-finals. They are an inspiration."
During the event, Laurel Springs hosted an informational gathering and Coaches Seminar where Mosley Gordanier, Laurel Springs School Counselor Ashley Squires, and Social Studies Academic Department Chair Rachelle Wafer discussed the benefits of attending an accredited online school like Laurel Springs. Coaching legend Larry Stefanki (John McEnroe, Marcelo Rios, and Andy Roddick) was introduced and spoke to about 75 parents and players.
"I always encourage kids to stay in school, get their education, and not turn pro until they are really ready," Stefanki said. "Not everybody can be an Andy Roddick. It benefits a majority of the top junior tennis players to continue their education in college."
Past ASICS Easter Bowl winners and Laurel Springs alumni include current WTA pros Alexa Glatch, Christina McHale, Gail Brodsky and defending NCAA singles champion Nicole Gibbs of Stanford.
Other top Laurel Springs School performances at the ASICS Easter Bowl included Robbie Bellamy, who made the semifinals in Boys' 18s doubles. In the Girls' 16s singles, three Laurel Springs students made the Round of 16 and had to face one another during the next two rounds. Hanna Chang downed Alaina Miller in a tough three-set quarterfinal with Chang then beating No. 3-seeded Meredith Xepoleas in the quarterfinals. Chang fell in the semifinals.
