PHILADELPHIA, PA, May 30, 2013
Vivian McPayah Obiamalu is a strong advocate for gender equality. In today's world, there are as many challenges holding women back from achieving their full potential as there are organizations striving to help them do so, which is why Obiamalu is passionate about supporting the individuals and non-profits that are dedicated to educating women regarding equality and how they can improve their lives by striving to obtain it. Here, Obiamalu comments on a recent article published by The Huffington Post that highlights the efforts of WINGS, a Guatemala-based organization that is striving to help women to understand how family planning can improve the equality that they experience. The article explains that Guatemala is ranked 116 out of 135 countries in terms of gender equality, which makes this issue a primary concern for the individuals at WINGS. The organization has taken the approach of educating women about family planning options in order to assist them in meeting their personal, educational, and professional goals. The article asserts: "Family planning education for a Guatemalan teen helps her delay her first pregnancy, stay in school, and secure the job that gives her economic independence. Family planning helps a Guatemalan woman limit her pregnancies, assuring that she can afford to send her daughters to school rather than keeping them home to care for younger siblings, and giving those same daughters a better chance at realizing their dreams."
Having children at a young age is just one of the many reasons why numerous women in Guatemala are unable to achieve equality; however, addressing this issue is a way in which WINGS and other organizations can strive to break the cycle that the women in this country seem to be stuck in, which is described aptly in the quote above.
"As a mother, I would never want to tell women not to have children, as I have enjoyed raising my children and believe that they are an important part of my family," Vivian McPayah Obiamalu states. "However, it is important that women understand the idea of family planning so that they can have children, if they choose to, after they have finished school or started their careers. Too many women in Guatemala and other such countries are not educated regarding their options, which makes them unable to achieve gender equality because they don't have the knowledge and tools to do so. This is why I so strongly support organizations that fight for the education of women, as they offer a way for girls to choose their own paths."
Vivian McPayah Obiamalu urges individuals to seek out information regarding organizations that are dedicated to gender equality and to support those about which they are passionate in order to improve the lives of women around the world.
