Despite Developments in Mobile Apps, 123Mountain Says Gear is Essential for Hiking Safety

With a rise in mobile apps that serve hikers and campers, many are becoming reliant on technology to enjoy outdoor adventures. Retailer 123Mountain commends the tech progress, but encourages use of traditional gear.

2013-05-30
PHILADELPHIA, PA, May 30, 2013 (Press-News.org) According to online merchandiser 123Mountain, mobile technology and digital solutions are becoming so prevalent that they have even found their place in outdoor recreation. In fact, a recent article from Digital Trends highlights the latest in mobile apps for hikers and campers alike, noting that these platforms can serve as great informational resources. Although 123Mountain endorses the advancement of technology to assist hikers, the company warns first-timers to not become solely reliant on mobile apps to have a safe outdoor adventure.

In a recent press statement, 123Mountain explains, "The expression 'There's an app for that,' has become so integrated in our culture, that people can find virtually any resource they need to stay connected and informed wherever they are--even if they are hiking in the mountains. We think it is great that technology is encouraging individuals to pursue new adventures in nature. However, all outdoor enthusiasts need to remains aware that mobile technology is not a substitute for safety gear and apparel, but rather a supplement."

While the apps highlighted by Digital Trends can prove great resources for hikers and campers, the retailer notes that none are particularly fool-proof. For instance, the article details on service, "With the Every Trail app you'll get access to over 400,000 user submitted route maps and travel tips for your next adventure. You'll find maps with POIs marked, photos, audio guides, and travel logs, from all sorts of travelers across the world. You can use GPS to track your route, but you'll need to pay $4 to get the Pro version for offline use. You can also use this app to create your own guides for future use or for others to enjoy, and it's easy to share on social media directly from the app."

123Mountain responds in its press statement, "The Every Trail app can be a great way for individuals to find new areas to explore, but we would not encourage using this as the only navigational tool with outdoors. User-submitted material may prove misleading or incorrect, so it is important for hikers and campers to stay familiar with established routes, carry compasses, follow maps and trail markers and inform a third party of a group's whereabouts."

The company adds in its press statement, "Smartphones are great resources for those who may need to contact a party for help in case of an emergency, so we do encourage hikers and campers to carry them. However, in an immediate danger, it is unlikely that a phone or app will solve the problem." Given this understanding, 123Mountain strongly encourages hikers and campers to make sure that they bring solid, secure resources--including food, first aid kits, weatherproof apparel and water--in addition to their phones.
