123Mountain responds in its press statement, "The Every Trail app can be a great way for individuals to find new areas to explore, but we would not encourage using this as the only navigational tool with outdoors. User-submitted material may prove misleading or incorrect, so it is important for hikers and campers to stay familiar with established routes, carry compasses, follow maps and trail markers and inform a third party of a group's whereabouts."

The company adds in its press statement, "Smartphones are great resources for those who may need to contact a party for help in case of an emergency, so we do encourage hikers and campers to carry them. However, in an immediate danger, it is unlikely that a phone or app will solve the problem."
