Dallas Dermatologists Report Increase in Dermal Filler Requests
2013-05-31
DALLAS, TX, May 31, 2013 (Press-News.org) The dermatologists at the Dallas Center for Dermatology and Aesthetics (www.dallascosmeticderm.com) say they have seen an increase in the number of requests for dermal fillers such as JUVEDERM in Dallas. This boost reflects a national trend.

Soft tissue fillers, also referred to as dermal fillers or injectable fillers, increased in use by 5% from 2011 to 2012, according to the 2012 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This was led primarily by hyaluronic acid fillers, or HA fillers, such as JUVEDERM and Restylane, which increased by more than 100,000 injections, a rise of 9%.

"Not everyone is willing to undergo surgery to improve their appearance," says Lori D. Stetler, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at the Dallas Center for Dermatology and Aesthetics. "But advances in non-surgical treatments open up cosmetic procedures to a broader cross-section of people, and awareness and acceptance of these procedures is on the rise."

Patients have a variety of treatments to choose from that don't involve surgery but still produce noticeable, natural-looking improvements, Dr. Stetler says.

"Even those willing to undergo surgery are trying non-surgical treatments first to see whether they can get the results they want," she says.

Like dermal fillers, botulinum toxin type A products such as Dysport and BOTOX Cosmetic have also seen increased demand, both in Dallas and nationally. After years, these products remain the leaders among minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. From 2011 to 2012, they saw a rise of more than 460,000 procedures nationwide.

Non-surgical skincare treatments are often the right choice for many patients, says Kristel D. Polder, M.D., another board-certified dermatologist at the Dallas Center for Dermatology and Aesthetics. She says taking care of your skin is a great way to begin if you're trying to restore or maintain a youthful, attractive appearance.

"The best results in cosmetic procedures are those that are subtle," Dr. Polder says. "They enhance the person's natural appearance, rather than completely change it. If people start fighting the signs of aging that really begin to show up in their 30s and 40s, they can put off surgery much longer. Non-surgical treatments such as BOTOX and JUVEDERM, and even laser skin resurfacing, can really make a difference early on. If people take care of their skin now, they may feel they never need surgery."

The ASPS, the group that published the report, is a specialty medical organization that represents plastic surgeons in the U.S. and promotes high standards in training, ethics, practice, and research. More information about the plastic surgery statistics can be found at www.plasticsurgery.org, the website of the ASPS.

The staff at the Dallas Center for Dermatology and Aesthetics makes it their mission to be one of the area's premier dermatology practices. Dr. Lori Stetler is a board-certified dermatologist who received her medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Kristel Polder, also a board-certified dermatologist, graduated with honors from University of Texas Medical School at Houston. They integrate the latest in aesthetic procedures with clinical dermatology treatments to provide their patients with a lifetime of health and beauty.
