LONG ISLAND CITY, NY, June 02, 2013 (Press-News.org) Just as relevant and revelatory today as when it first premiered in 1991, playwright Keith Curran's Walking the Dead finds folly amidst tragedy. The story begins at a funeral, where shock artist Maya Deboats has gathered friends and family to pay respects and build an artistic "installation memorial" to Maya's recently murdered lover Veronica. As the cast of outspoken eccentrics—including a bigoted mother, an alcoholic ex, and a failed documentary maker— share their memories of the deceased, the play flashes back to Veronica's life as a transgendered man named Homer. The ensemble recalls the ups and downs of Veronica/Homer's transition as the play wittily and daringly explores matters of family, sexuality, and the human condition.
The show is directed by Bedlam ensemble member Russell Boyle, who navigates the delicate story with dramatic finesse and an eye for humor. The cast includes Paule Aboite in the commanding role of Maya, along with Bedlam regulars Lucia Cousins and Jeremy Rafal.
Bedlam Ensemble
Bedlam Ensemble's collection of local and world-traveling actors, producers, and writers seem to have an unquenchable thirst for creative exploration. But an emphasis on artistry doesn't preclude accessibility, as they stage seasons that balance newer works such as Neil LaBute's Reasons to be Pretty with classics including Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. When they aren't producing inventive dramas and comedies, the Ensemble keeps audiences on their thoroughly tickled toes at the monthly Naturally Delicious improv show. The group's passion extends beyond the fly rail—a nonprofit company themselves, the members also worked to keep Edgar Allen Poe's house open to the public by donating proceeds from their 2011 production of The Delirium of Edgar Allen Poe.
