Martha's Vineyard Reality Show "The Vineyard," Wins Comment from David Gallagher, Edgartown Resident

The filming of ABC Family's new "docudrama" The Vineyard has attracted much attention to popular summer getaway Martha's Vineyard. David Gallagher, Edgartown resident, comments on how this show could impact the community.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 04, 2013

For Martha's Vineyard resident David Gallagher Edgartown has remained a small, beautiful place that welcomes annual visitors and tourists alike. While the area of the island has proven popular for years, Edgartown is now becoming a central location for The Vineyard, a "docusoap" reality show currently being filmed for debut during ABC Family's mid-summer season. While the show has yet to premiere, Gallagher explains that it could have a positive effect on the area and the community.

Supporting the sentiments of David Gallagher, Edgartown residents have proven welcoming to the cast and crew of The Vineyard, according to a recent article from The Martha's Vineyard Gazette. The article states, "Filming is underway for The Vineyard reality show, which is getting a warm welcome in some quarters. Bret Blakeney with 25/7 Productions told Edgartown selectmen Monday that filming started last week at a private property in Oak Bluffs for the 'docusoap' reality show." While the premise of the show is described to revolve around the lives of visitors--aged 18 to 26--Blakeney explains that the program is designed to be family-friendly. Specifically, The Vineyard is structured to capture the cast's interaction "with the locals" and they make friends with them and relationships.

Although reality television programs have earned much criticism for invading communities and disrupting the lives their citizens, The Martha's Vineyard Gazette explains that The Vineyard production is small. David Gallagher, Edgartown resident, comments, "The island has seen its fair share of filming--namely, the production of Jaws. Seeing how much commerce and attention the entertainment industry can bring Martha's Vineyard, I doubt that many will be opposed to welcoming the crew of The Vineyard."

The article adds, "[Blakeney] also said the production is not on the scale of Jaws, the most famous example of Hollywood coming to the Island. The show will have a very small footprint and small crew, he said, and 'unless you ran into us you probably wouldn't know where we were'."

Support of the area's selectmen and citizens have even encouraged the crew to stay longer, with another Martha's Vineyard Gazette article suggesting that the quick-paced reality show may have a sequel season. In agreement with some selectmen, David Gallagher of Edgartown, believes this show--with its "limited footprint"--could invite more business to the island and will most likely present it in a positive light.

"Martha's Vineyard is definitely an escape for those of us that live and visit here on a regular basis, but it is important for the rest of America to know that this special corner of the U.S. exists. You can't find any place like this island anywhere else in the country and The Vineyard, will help the public realize that," David Gallagher Edgartown resident, concludes.
