Frederick Douglass Goes to Washington June 19, 2013

After five years, the Frederick Douglass statue will finally be going up in the Capitol and many officials and citizens will be there for this historic event.

BRENTWOOD, MD, June 20, 2013

After a constitutional amendment signed by President Obama and five years of lobbying by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton, New York Senator Chuck Schumer and DC Mayor Gray, among many others, the seven foot bronze sculpture of famed Washington DC abolitionist Frederick Douglass is finally set to be installed into the United States Capitol.

Sculpted by famed national and local artist Steven Weitzman, the first ever statue representing the District of Columbia will finally be placed among the other states' statues on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, 11:00am, EST. The ceremony is being officiated by the Speaker of the House, the Honorable John A. Boehner.

Artist Steven Weitzman cannot be restricted to one type of art discipline. Although best known for his site-specific figurative sculptures and environmental designs, his pieces range in scale from objects that fit into one's hand to installations that span miles of space. This statue is one of his most high profile pieces of art.
