MELBOURNE, FL, June 22, 2013 (Press-News.org) Animal Medical Clinic, a Melbourne-based veterinary practice founded in 1964, earned the certification as the first "cat-friendly practice" in Brevard County from the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP).
The Cat Friendly Practice program was created by AAFP to improve the treatment, handling and overall healthcare of cats. In American homes today more than 86 million cats are loved as pets, compared to 78 million dogs. However, according to national statistics, twice as many cats will never visit a veterinarian when compared to dogs. AAFP reports 60% of cat owners say their cat hates going to the veterinarian.
"After caring for pets in Brevard for nearly 50 years, we're pleased to bring this program to our community," said Dr. Stephanie Carraway of Animal Medical Clinic. "We evaluated every aspect of our practice and its environment from the perspective of the cat. We can proudly say that from the minute they walk though the door, our patients and clients will be part of a welcoming, comfortable experience that will ultimately lead to the improved health of our feline patients."
"There is a tremendous recognition that while cats are the largest percentage of companion animals in homes, their wellness visits and other types of veterinary care are much lower than for dogs," said Dr. Elizabeth J. Colleran, AAFP Past-President.
The association pioneered the Cat Friendly Practice program to provide a framework for creating a positive practice environment for cats, including medical care that supports a cat's unique needs and knowledgeable staff members who understand feline friendly handling.
Our practice has adopted an environment that is less stressful to cats and meets the cat's unique needs. The practice staff is knowledgeable in ways that they can interact and handle cats so that examinations and procedures will be less stressful.
A Cat Friendly Practice also values the owner's contribution to their cat's healthcare plan and will make every effort to help you understand your cat's needs and help you learn what you can do at home to ensure that they get the care they need.
Founded in 1964, Animal Medical Clinic operates a full-service, American Animal Hospital Association-accredited veterinary practice and hospital. The practice staff includes seven veterinarians in which full-service veterinary care including annual wellness visits, surgery, advanced diagnostics and lab testing, dental care, acupuncture and boarding are offered. The practice is located at 4020 S. Babcock Street in Melbourne. For more information, call 321.727.2421 or visit http://www.Animal-Medical-Clinic.com.
