Christmas In July Festivities

Article about Christmas in July celebrations in the southern hemisphere, and how people fund the holiday season.

2013-06-27
WEST PERTH, AUSTRALIA, June 27, 2013 (Press-News.org) Every year thousands of people in the southern hemisphere celebrate Christmas themed celebration in the month of July.

The reason for this unusual celebration is that in the southern hemisphere, seasons are the opposite to that in the Northern hemisphere, and Christmas is traditionally cold and wintery feeling event. Many expats who are from countries in the Northern hemisphere miss the wintery conditions on December 25th, and find it to be quite strange to have Christmas in hot weather, therefore the tradition of holding Christmas themed parties in the coldest month in the Southern Hemisphere, came to be.

The parties can consist of all manner of Christmas themed events and often people will wrap up warm, serve mulled wine, decorate their Christmas trees and even have people dressed up like Santa Claus.

The main countries that partake in the celebrations are Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. And people often throw private parties with just family and friends, however others may choose to attend public parties in bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

Christmas in July can be a costly affair, from the price of buying that gorgeous new outfit to show off to all your family and friends, maybe purchasing presents for friends or partaking in a "secret Santa". With the cost of food ever increasing as well, and admission to a club or restaurant plus maybe a few Christmas in July drinks, the cost soon mounts up.

In order to have a really nice Christmas in July celebration, some people may not have budgeted for the occasion and will use credit cards in order to purchase all of the necessities. Others may get a cash loan from a payday loans company such as cashtrain in order to buy their outfit, gifts for others and food.

The Christmas in July celebration ended up becoming the Christmas in August celebration in Yellowstone national park in the 1950s so that famous composer Handel could perform Messiah at the event, and in some Australian communities August has become the new time of year to celebrate a wintery themed Christmas in order to accommodate calendars and varied international timings. Many people state that their favourite parts of the "holiday" are the roast which is also traditional in the December version of Christmas, however many Australians celebrate with a barbecue in place of a traditional sit-down roast Christmas dinner, due to the heat and December being a typically "outdoor" time of year.

Many events happen all over Australia to celebrate Christmas in July, and each state and city has its own traditional festivities and themes. Sydney, for example has a Sydney harbour cruise and many places both at sea and on land serve high tea.

Many travel up to the Blue Mountains where it is "Christmas every day" or certainly during the Australian winter months of July and August. They host a large celebration called Yulefest where there are lots of roast dinners and feasts being served in many of the hotels, restaurants, bars and motels. There are also lots of festive traditional activities such as candle lit carol services and group dancing. The mountains are also a great place to take children for to meet Santa.

In Melbourne, the famous Puffing Billy Train, takes you on a long festive Christmassy journey, where you get served a traditional turkey dinner in the warmth of a classy steam train.

Canberra also continues with the train theme with a Christmas in July Party train that runs with festive party games, food and drinks, and Perth hosts a day at the races.

However you decide to celebrate Christmas in July, enjoy the winter festivities and spend it with your loved ones.
