PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN, March 28, 2014 (Press-News.org) Following a record-breaking 2013, organisers of the 31st edition of the Palma International Boat Show have expanded exhibition space both on land and in water to create "probably the most successful boat show in the last five years". The Show runs from 30 April to 4 May.
Guy Norrish from long-term exhibitor Marina Estrella, comments, "Following a 2012 hiatus, the comeback 2013 Palma International Boat Show was a real hit. The new format of fewer days, better opening times, more boats on the water and reasonable ticket prices suited both exhibitors and visitors. Marina Estrella closed the Show with confirmed sales of over two million euros, including the first of the innovative Azimut 55S to reach the Balearics, and more followed, so we are looking forward to a good show in 2014."
Indeed, due to the Boat Show's expansion, Marina Estrella will be relocated for the first time since the very first edition it attended in 1984, some 30 years ago. The Palma Superyacht Show, which now runs alongside the mainstream event, is growing from 47 yachts over 24 metres in 2013 to 65 or more for 2014, and will displace Marina Estrella in the process.
"Fortunately the organisers have rewarded our loyalty," continues Guy, "and Marina Estrella will now have a prime position at the end of the newly renovated Pier 2. For the first time Pier 2 will be connected to Pier 3 by a swing bridge which will not only allow boats to exit for sea trials but also enable visitors to walk around the Show in a continuous flow - from superyachts to 'normal', and vice versa. We are putting no fewer than 12 boats into our line-up for 2014, from the Cobalt 262 through to the recession-busting Varianta 37 up to the Azimut Magellano 76, to reflect both our wide range and commitment to the Show."
This year's Palma International Boat Show will benefit from the recent completion of Moll Vell Marina's 6.5 million euro makeover which releases 25% more on-land exhibition space previously taken over by construction work. Meanwhile the new pier configuration will increase the number of berths overall from 110 in 2013 to 200 in 2014. Once again superyachts, for sale or for charter, will have a major presence, with vessels up to 70 metres in length on display. Regattas, tapas and other cultural events will also enhance the Show.
Guy finishes, "Taken in the context of a stream of good news for Balearic boaters this year including a relaxation of onerous yachting licences for Spanish owners, the removal of the dreaded Matriculation Tax on larger charter boats, an area Marina Estrella has identified for growth, and the tangible support of Balearics' President Jose Ramón Bauzá for the nautical sector, Palma is well on its way to reinforcing its deserved reputation as the centre of boating for the Mediterranean."

Its office network is extensive across Spain, in particular the Balearic Islands, with additional presence in Holland, Gibraltar and Andorra.

An Australian study -- recently published in the American Journal of Epidemiology -- examined data from over 500 truck accidents that took place from 2008 to 2011. The researchers found that truck drivers who were behind the wheel from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. were three times more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle accident than those who were driving between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
The lead author of the study noted that ...
