FENTON, MO, April 04, 2014 (Press-News.org) The human foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and more than a hundred ligaments, tendons and muscles. On average, people take 2,000 steps per mile. In short, people put their feet to work-a lot. Thus, it's not surprising that many people complain of foot pain and other issues.
While many people's feet are causing them discomfort, they don't take the initiative to see a professional. To reach out and help more people, Dr. Wittock did the next best thing. He went to the radio. A person can listen to the radio in the car, at work and while in the workplace. It's easier to reach a wider audience.
A popular theme nowadays is call-ins, which request listeners to reach out to the radio station. This was an opportune time for Dr. Wittock to find out what the St. Louis residents were suffering from most when it comes to their feet.
As part of the segment, there was one topic of particular interest. It's called plantar fasciitis.
"Plantar fasciitis is the most common foot complaint that Dr. Cardenas and I see in the office. Depending on the cause, we have a number of treatments for plantar fasciitis," explains Dr. Wittock.
What is plantar fasciitis? According to WebMD, it's a condition that causes heel pain. The name derives from plantar fascia, a ligament that connects your toes to your heel bone, which is why heel pain is the primary symptom.
On air, Dr. Wittock mentioned three types of treatment he provides and recommends to relieve an inflamed plantar fascia: orthotics, steroid injections and physical therapy.
Orthotics can accommodate to the movement of the feet. Steroid injections directly treat the inflamed ligament, and stretching helps strengthen any micro tears in the muscle. If patients weren't able to tune in during Dr. Wittock's radio session, they can go straight to the source at the Ankle & Foot Institute.
Since the feet are very important to daily function, foot issues need to be taken care of properly. For Drs. Richard Wittock and Gabriel Cardenas Jr., treating feet is second nature, and patients can count on them to treat the underlying cause. There is a collective sigh of relief-from patients' feet.
