MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, April 20, 2011 (Press-News.org) THE nation's three to ten year olds would far rather do well at school than become famous, a new survey shows.
In an age of instant celebrity the UK's youngsters show us how it's done as doing well at school (20%) tops a list of their favourite wishes, leaving the wish for fame (6%) trailing behind whilst being grown up (2%) barely makes the list.
20% of children put their education ahead of material goods, with only 13% choosing a new toy and 13% a holiday when asked to choose what they would wish for if they were magical for just one day.
Becoming a footballer or a princess are still huge favourites with 16% of youngsters, plus being able to fly is also high on the agenda with 12% choosing this magical power.
Political problems aren't passing our three to ten year olds by as 10% of them chose world peace as their priority.
Altruism isn't an unknown concept either and 5% of children would choose to give their wish away to a friend or family member.
Interestingly the nations trend for reduced family numbers does not seem to be worrying our children, with only 2% wishing to have a new brother or sister.
The survey was carried out to mark the launch of the magical new Merlin's Apprentice ride (http://www.legolanddiscoverycentre.co.uk/manchester/en/news-and-events/ride.htm) at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre at the Trafford Centre, Manchester and consulted 2094 children aged three to ten visiting the centre from February to April 2011.
Neil Crittenden, general manager at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre comments: 'To launch the new Merlin's Apprentice ride it seemed apt to find out what our children would really wish for if they had magical powers. I'm delighted with the results, it seems we have a lot to learn from our children who show remarkable maturity in putting their education first.'
