Uneducated Boaters Put Families At Risk

The alarming number of people injured in boats each year is due mainly to the fact that boaters don't take a boat safety class or read maritime safety articles.

WINTHROP, MA, June 01, 2011

According to Robin G. Coles of TheNauticalLifestyle.com, many boaters are risking their families and friends safety with a liaise-fair attitude.

Coles explained that in 2009, alone, 6,190 vessels were involved in some kind of boating accident here in the United States, resulting in either death or injuries. This was according to a report by the US Coast Guard.

"Boaters are just naive of the dangers posed by not understanding how their boat handles," Coles said. "Too often they are out joy riding and not paying attention to the weather or don't know the rules of the waterways. Then, add insult to injury, they're not wearing life jackets and/or don't have enough life jackets for their passengers available."

Coles said that there really is no excuse since so much information is readily available at the boater's fingertips. Years ago, you had to wait for the Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron to offer courses, but now different states are starting to force boaters to take a class, at least under a certain age. Boaters are still missing out though, on the essentials of buying a boat and how that decision affects everyone in the family, not to mention everything else that goes with boat ownership. The result has been a staggering amount of accidents with uneducated boaters in the age group of 36 to 55 (Recreation Boating Statistics 2009 by the USCG).

Coles explained that she is concerned about all these accidents and how crowded the waterways have become with careless boaters.

If you're looking for answers to your boating questions and want a quick reference, check out Coles' new book: "Boating Secrets: 127 Top Tips To Help You Buy and Enjoy Your Boat - revealed by eleven marine industry experts." Coles' book will not replace any classroom instruction, but it will at least give you various money saving tips and promises to be entertaining through the use of amusing stories.
