LA JOLLA, CA, July 08, 2011 (Press-News.org) Leading refractive surgeon and researcher Dr. David Schanzlin at the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center (www.shileyeyelasik.com) has observed an increase in the number of women and men choosing LASIK eye surgery in San Diego. This popular procedure can correct some of the most common refractive problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
"In San Diego, LASIK technology has advanced to the point where we can now tailor our procedures to accommodate individual needs and provide the best possible result," says Dr. Schanzlin, who serves as Professor and Director of Keratorefractive Surgery at Shiley Eye Center, UCSD Department of Ophthalmology. "All of the treatments we provide at Shiley Eye Center are customized on a case-by-case basis using state-of-the-art equipment."
Shiley Eye Center uses three types of laser equipment for custom LASIK procedures: the iFS IntraLase , the VISX Advanced CustomVue LASIK, and the ALLEGRETTO WAVE . In contrast to earlier methods of LASIK, which relied on the patient's eye prescription to reshape the cornea, these new generation lasers preserve each individual's specific eye characteristics. This advanced technology reduces unwanted side effects such as night vision problems and provides superior results.
"By maintaining the natural cornea curvature of the eye, we can achieve results that can be better than standard 20/20 vision," Dr. Schanzlin says. "The level of vision acuity from custom LASIK is greater than what can be achieved with contacts, glasses, or even standard LASIK."
The science behind these newer lasers is known as "WaveFront technology." The system creates a 3-dimensional computer "map" to help guide the laser when re-shaping the eye's corneal surface. Dr. Schanzlin explains that the map is similar to a fingerprint because it provides crucial information and exact measurements needed to make the proper adjustments to the cornea.
"WaveFront technology improves not only how much you see, but your overall vision quality," Dr. Schanzlin says. "Our patients experience improvements in fine details and contrast, and report fewer visual distortions such as light sensitivity, glaring and shadows."
Dr. David J. Schanzlin is Professor and Director of Keratorefractive Surgery at the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center (www.shileyeyelasik.com). A leader and worldwide authority in the refractive surgery field, Dr. Schanzlin has helped develop many new technologies, including Intacs corneal implants and the excimer laser for LASIK eye surgery. Dr. Schanzlin and his research teams have participated in many of the most notable advancements within the field of laser vision correction. Consistently selected by his peers as one of the Best Doctors in America, Dr. Schanzlin was elected President of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, an organization of over 3,500 refractive surgeons.
