DeJarnette Medical Image Data Sharing Solutions at RSNA
2011-11-23
TOWSON, MD, November 23, 2011 (Press-News.org) DeJarnette has been committed to medical image data sharing since the company's founding in 1985. The company was among the pioneers in the field of medical image data sharing, and led the way with the release of its first "store and forward" medical network gateway, the ImageShare 910 in 1991. In 2003 the company released the "best in show" Intelligent Router (http://www.dejarnette.com/Library/News/IR-071-10C-G.pdf) which provides sophisticated workflow driven routing. In recent years we have kept our commitment to this market by introducing products, xDL and xDR , which address the market for sharing data between disparate PACS in a clinically significant fashion.

Today, medical image data and report sharing is seen to be one of the keys to improving healthcare operating efficiency and reducing costs. According to Wayne DeJarnette, Ph.D., there are currently two inter-vendor, inter-facility data sharing solution paradigms; Vendor Neutral Archives, and Vendor Neutral Routers. DeJarnette is a technology leader in both of these markets.

xDL - the Cross-Enterprise Document Librarian is DeJarnette's solution to archive based data sharing. xDL (http://www.dejarnette.com/Library/News/xDL-073-10D-A.pdf), in the market since 2008, provides for storing and managing medical imaging data and documents so as to facilitate their exchange between PACS of disparate vendors. The company's "Context Management" technology (http://www.dejarnette.com/Library/News/ContMan.pdf) provides for the exchange of
data between disparate PACS and medical facilities without requiring legacy systems to support IHE profiles such as XDS. At the same time, PACS which support IHE profiles can also make use of the physically distributed, logically centralized archive.

Further cementing its success, xDL was deployed this year in concert with the company's VNA channel partner, Iron Mountain of Boston, MA. Iron Mountain markets onsite, offsite and hybrid vendor neutral archiving solutions to imaging departments and medical treatment facilities in the United States. Iron Mountain's solutions can be purchased either as a managed service or as a
capital equipment purchase.

In 2011, nineteen medical treatment facilities went live in North America with xDL in both large and small facilities.

It is sometimes the case that a medical enterprise already owns a large serviceable DICOM archive for their enterprise. Such an archive is not generally suitable for sharing image and report data between disparate PACS sites. However, it is sufficient for storing data generated at multiple disparate sites, with each site being able to retrieve their stored data. For these customers, DeJarnette has developed xDR - the Cross-Enterprise Document Router. xDR provides for routed data sharing by making use of the company's "Context Management" technology in routing the data. xDR provides the glue that holds together such a system. xDR ties together an IHE conformant registry, a DICOM conformant enterprise archive and numerous PACS and information systems to accomplish the sharing of image and report data by means of object routing. xDR supports the relevant IHE profiles, DICOM and HL7 standards.

xDR was developed for such a situation in Ontario, Canada (http://www.cgi.com/en/CGI-Contract-University-Health-Network-GTA-West-Health-IT-DIR). The Ontario solution allows for data sharing through image and report routing. xDR is currently undergoing integration testing and will be deployed in the greater Toronto area starting in January, 2012. xDR will tie together 22 medical treatment facilities and nearly 10,000 clinicians for the purpose of image and report sharing.

"This is a very exciting time at DeJarnette and in the industry. Image and report sharing products, whether archives or routing products are here to stay. The concept is gaining wide acceptance and its perceived value is high. We are clearly at the beginning of a paradigm shift in how image storage is perceived, used, purchased, and supported. Vendor neutral is not just an adjective used
to describe an archive or router, it is also the end user customer's state of mind," stated Wayne DeJarnette, Ph.D.

Information about xDL, xDR and Vendor Neutral Archives and Routers can be obtained at http://www.vendorneutralarchive.com or http://www.dejarnette.com/DataSharing.htm.
