Buer Well Drilling Helps to Make Private Wells Available to Grand Rapids Residents

West Michigan well drilling service provider helps city residents and business owners obtain access to private wells as an alternative to tapping municipal water lines.

2011-11-23
CALEDONIA, MI, November 23, 2011 (Press-News.org) West Michigan water well drilling company, Buer Well Drilling, has been working with residents of Grand Rapids, Walker, Kentwood and outlying cities to better understand their well water rights and options for many decades by keeping an ear to local legislation proceedings and offering assistance in navigating local health department requirements for private wells. While Buer Well Drilling has a vested interest in informing city dwellers of their rights to private water wells, the company's pursuit of consumer education goes beyond business strategy.

Most recently (November 2010), the Grand Rapids City Council considered eliminating city residents' rights to drill replacement wells for potable water on their properties. City property owners and Buer Well Drilling owner Steve Buer spread the word to local residents that this legislature was pending, and Grand Rapids citizens responded by speaking out against the City Council's proposed action. As a result of public outcry, Grand Rapids City Commissioners voted to allow Grand Rapids property owners to drill replacement wells, rather than forcing well owners to abandon their wells and connect to municipal water lines (after a permit for the well is obtained from the local Health Department). The nearby city of Walker passed similar legislature shortly thereafter.

Not only does tapping into one's own private water well eliminate the costs of paying for city water; it often provides cleaner, more healthful water. City water systems - such as Grand Rapids' - typically source water from surface water, which can contain many contaminants and require extensive treatment. Aquifer water, on the other hand, is naturally purified and is most often free from chemical treatments found in municipal water.

"The issue of private water well rights goes beyond protecting our business," commented Buer Well Drilling owner Steve Buer. "City residents have a right to know what the healthiest options are for them and their families, and they should know what their legal options are. We don't push for one option or the other, we just want property owners to be aware."

Buer Well Drilling provides assistance for property owners living in Grand Rapids or Walker who wish to drill a new private water well after their old well has failed. The company, well-versed in well ownership requirements, will apply for a well permit with the Kent County Health Department, which will issue a permit for the new well as long as the water supply below the property is safe for consumption.

Buer Well Drilling is a water well service company based in Caledonia, Michigan. Offering residential and commercial well drilling and water pump services throughout Grand Rapids and West Michigan, Buer Well Drilling has five generations of experience.
