As a result of public outcry, Grand Rapids City Commissioners voted to allow Grand Rapids property owners to drill replacement wells, rather than forcing well owners to abandon their wells and connect to municipal water lines (after a permit for the well is obtained from the local Health Department). The nearby city of Walker passed similar legislature shortly thereafter.

Not only does tapping into one's own private water well eliminate the costs of paying for city water; it often provides cleaner, more healthful water. City water systems - such as Grand Rapids' - typically source water from surface water, which can contain many contaminants and require extensive treatment.
