To that end, StAT publicly launched its Google Transit Trip Planner on March 21 that allows customers to plan a transit trip in seconds. "We now have a lot of smart systems with which we're providing information. We have GPS units on all of our buses. From an operations perspective, that allows us to react to situations. With NextBus, we spent a lot of time cleaning up background information regarding routes and stops so passengers now have real-time information," says Transit Director Bob McDonald, a transit industry veteran of more than 30 years who came on board with StAT three years ago.

The City of St. Albert is northwest of the provincial capital of Edmonton and served approximately 1.25 million riders in 2011. StAT directly employs 22 in an administrative capacity and contracts though a third party for the drivers, dispatchers, trainers and inspectors necessary to operate the 55-bus fleet.
