SAN DIEGO, CA, May 23, 2012 (Press-News.org) In a report in Supply Chain Digital, the benefits of Millis Transfer's affiliation with the Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay initiative are examined. Diverse, responsive and family-owned for more than 70 years, the dry-van truckload carrier based in Black River, WI provides regional, dedicated and cross-country service for clients in 48 states.
Millis Transfer is a SmartWay Transport Partner under the direction of the third-generation management team of President David Millis, Vice President of Sales Steve Millis, Treasurer Dan Millis, also Director of Safety and Vice President Mike Millis, also Director of the Millis Training Institute. Established in 1936, the company directly employs 972. The driver fleet consists of 99 percent company drivers, and the company runs a fleet of 800 tractors and 2,300 trailers.
The company got on board with the SmartWay initiative early on. The program identifies measures to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution from the transportation supply chain industry. To date, it has helped US companies save $6.1 billion in fuel costs.
IT Director Jim Wright oversees SmartWay data compilation for the company. "This became an industry standard because of concerns with cap and trade programs. Larger companies looked hard at how to reduce their carbon footprint. We knew our customers were looking at the impact of cap and trade and knew we had to be part of SmartWay right from the get-go," says Wright.
"We were quite surprised at where we fit into the model. We came in very high, which told us we were already spec-ing our trucks and trailers as efficiently as possible," he adds. The company maintains SmartWay's top score of 1.25.
