EATONTOWN, NJ, August 24, 2012 (Press-News.org) The recent disappointing New Jersey State Unemployment report, along with an unpredictable political climate, has employers remaining cautious on hiring. National and local trends are indicating that these factors are impacting Central New Jersey's workforce composition, shifting the region to a more contingent workforce.
The percentage of temporary workers in the workforce is at its highest level in more than five years according to recent figures from the DOL. Jon Osborne, Vice President of Research and Editorial for Staffing Industry Analysts, states that the contingent labor pool makes up approximately 10 percent of the workforce. He estimates that an average organization spends about 15 percent of its labor dollars on temporary workers.
"We are seeing a consistent increase in job orders for temporary workers in Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex counties," says Frank Wyckoff, President of The Wyckoff Group (TWG) - Snelling Staffing, a staffing firm serving the Central Jersey area. "Leveraging temporary workers is a commonly used staffing strategy for employers during a recovering economy."
Wyckoff provides five key reasons why employers shift to this option:
Flexibility - Temporary and contract workers allow a company to address demand without making long-term personnel decisions.
Preventing Employee Burnout - Employee burnout is becoming a prevalent workforce issue. Additional help relieves staff members of an overwhelming workload, boosting team energy, morale and productivity.
Avoiding Unemployment Claims - Temporary workers are technically the employees of the staffing agency, so unemployment claims impact the agency, not the employing company. That means there's no impact on an organization's unemployment rating if a worker is terminated.
Eliminating Payrolling, Administrative Costs and Benefits Spending - There are many hidden costs associated with keeping employees on payroll. When using temporary employees, all of these extra expenses are now the staffing agency's responsibility.
Adding New Talent - Temporary and contract employees are often eager to work and prove themselves for future employment opportunities. They tend to provide a high quality of work.
