AT&T Partners with UNC Journalism School on Inaugural Heritage Calendar

Students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to Pen Biographies of 2013 Calendar Honorees

2012-09-02
RALEIGH, NC, September 02, 2012 (Press-News.org) AT&T North Carolina has announced a partnership with the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to interview, write and produce biographies for the honorees in the inaugural 2013 edition of "The Heritage Calendar: Celebrating the N.C. African-American Experience." The calendar will be unveiled on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at an event at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, which will be attended by honorees and their families.

Winston C. Cavin, lecturer at UNC, selected four students to assist with the project. Each student was given the opportunity to interview and write profiles of honorees, which will be published in the calendar and on the website. The participating students are: Katie Holt, a junior from Chapel Hill, Nora Chan, a senior and senior class president from Gaithersburg, Md., Justine Berger, a junior from Raleigh and Jamie Gnazzo, a junior from Richmond, Va.

The Heritage Calendar project will honor men and women of all races who have contributed significantly to the lives and experiences of African-Americans in the state. In addition to monthly honorees, the calendar will also highlight dates of significance in North Carolina and the nation. AT&T has plans to provide a printed version of the calendar, as well as an online version, in addition to interactive materials which educators can use in classrooms statewide.

QUOTES
"One of the hallmarks of our school is great storytelling, and The Heritage Calendar honorees have great stories to tell," said Susan King, dean of the school. "What an opportunity it is for our students to report on the fascinating lives, accomplishments and significance of these honorees. We are honored to share the talent and expertise of our students to support The Heritage Calendar, while also giving something back to the state's citizens."

"It was exciting to see how quickly Dean King and the faculty embraced The Heritage Calendar project," said Cynthia Marshall, President, AT&T North Carolina. "We knew that the involvement of one of the country's leading journalism programs would help us create a publication of the highest quality, while also providing unique learning opportunities for the students. We are thrilled that the school and its students are participating with us on this project."

2012-09-02
Back in 1999 when he was recording 'Ticket Out Of Dizneyland', Billie Reid remembered how he wrote 'Slaves Replacement Technology & The Neutron Bomb' in 1988. The next summer, Ben Elton's book 'Stark' was published, using a very similar theme. Billie pointed out that a couple he stayed with at a farmhouse south of Fremantle (who used to 'milk his brains then scoff') went on to rent from and stay with Ben and his wife Sophie: 'Ben's Stark appeared soon after,' said Billie. Back then I didn't delve that deeply. However I did broach the issue with him in late 2010, ...
