Slava Volman: Daycare is Expensive, But Well Worth The Price

NBC News released an article discussing how daycare costs for an infant are now higher than a year of in-state tuition at some four year colleges. Slava Volman believes that daycare is worth the price and is an investment in a child's future.

NEW YORK, NY, September 05, 2012

According to NBC News, rising daycare costs are making daily childcare more of an investment than a college education. A report conducted by Child Care Aware of America reports that daycare costs for an infant are now higher than a year of in-state tuition at a four year school in 35 states and Washington D.C. Slava Volman, owner of Shooting Stars Daycare, believes that a great daycare experience is worth it, despite the costs.

Says Volman, "Daycare is certainly an investment, and it's something parents should feel completely comfortable about. But if a family is financially able, daycare is one of the most important things you can do for a young child. A good daycare is more than just sitting in front of the TV eating animal crackers. At a good daycare facility, your child learns fundamentally important skills and experiences an educational, rich curriculum that will shape his or her life and school experience."

The NBC News article discusses how daycare in New York, the most expensive state for childcare, averages out to about more than fourteen thousand dollars per year for an infant. College Board data lists in-state tuition at $6,213 dollars per year.

Even in more affordable states, such as Wyoming, daycare will cost families roughly $7,727 per year, while a year of in-state college tuition only sets you back $4,125. These prices are staggering and have many families reconsidering a daycare investment.

Though Slava Volman acknowledges that these numbers are alarming, he also believes that daycare is worth the cost. Explains Volman, "When children come to daycare, they're learning priceless skills. They learn how to interact with other kids. They learn how to share, they learn how to spend time away from parents, and they learn how to make decisions about how to spend their time. These kids also engage in a highly structured curriculum. For many places, daycare is more like school or camp. Kids go on field trips, participate in hands-on activities, and learn valuable skills that will set them ahead when they enter school. These skills and experiences are worth every penny."

Slava Volman encourages parents to spend a significant amount of time researching daycare options for children. He explains that feeling completely confident in the services a daycare provides will help ease worries about the cost of the program. Explains Volman, "When you know your child is truly learning and growing from a daycare service, you worry less about the cost. You're at ease knowing that your child is benefitting from every dollar you invest."
