WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, September 15, 2012 (Press-News.org) The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme will host its Seventh Annual "Day for Kids" family event 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Martin V. Smith Youth Center, 1900 West 5th Street, Oxnard. The day celebrates children as the future of our society and encourages families to spend quality time together. There is no cost to attend.
Last year, 2,500 people attended the Club's event, which engages the community, local businesses and service agencies as they host booths and provide resources for youth and their families. "Day for Kids" encourages positive interaction with kids and their families through fun, play, mentoring and enrichment activities.
The free event boasts a family-fun atmosphere, with games, prizes, face painting, jolly jumpers, food and more. The Voices of Hope Choir will perform throughout the day, along with Folklorico. Kealoha and Company will perform a Polynesian Floor Show and the Twin Tigers will share their Martial Arts skills. There will also be information booths where families can get information about services provided within the community and BGCOP will be providing free new memberships and t-shirts for kids.
"Children thrive when they have a caring adult in their lives. This event brings awareness to that and gets families to spend fun time together," said Tim Blaylock, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme. "By setting aside a Saturday, we hope to encourage adults and youth to spend more time together and build a connection that will last a lifetime."
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America created the annual event in 2005 to strengthen relationships between positive adults and kids by educating them on the importance of spending meaningful time together.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme exists to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. With three full-service clubs and 18 school program sites, the organization is one of the largest of its kind in California, serving 9,000 members annually. It's also the first Boys & Girls Club of its kind to open in the Juvenile Justice Center. Program areas offered to youth include character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts, technology and sports/fitness/recreation opportunities.
