Power4Patriots Comments on Home Generator Safety
Home generators can be useful, but they can also be dangerous; Power4Patriots offers information on proper generator safety.
PHILADELPHIA, PA, October 03, 2012
It goes without saying that the average American homeowner relies on electrical power to keep his or her home running smoothly and effectively; whether for keeping refrigerated food cool, lights on, or the air conditioner humming, electrical power is invaluable. As many parts of the nation are ravaged by inclement weather, however, the ultimate uncertainty of electrical service providers becomes all the more apparent. As Americans increasingly consider the prospects of losing their electrical power due to freak weather trends, many homeowners are considering the option of a home generator. While home generators can prove useful, though, they can also prove risky. The Los Angeles Fire Department recently published a list of home generator safety tips--and it has won the attention of a company called Power4Patriots.According to the LAFD, a home electrical generator may seem like a convenience, but may, in the end, turn out to be "the very source of a disaster." The LAFD says that poorly installed or improperly operated generators can actually kill, either via carbon monoxide fumes or electric shock. The LAFD ultimately urges homeowners to enlist the services of a licensed electrician in installing these generators.
The LAFD statement has won the attention of Power4Patriots. Power4Patriots is a company that provides individuals with the knowledge and instruction they need to build solar panels and wind turbines, ultimately becoming independent of both utility companies and home generators. Power4Patriots has weighed in with its own press statement, opining about the uncertain nature of electrical generators.
"Few people realize that having a portable generator is not the quick and easy solution that it seems to be," says Frank Bates of Power4Patriots. "That's why I encourage people to investigate alternative sources for generating their own power, such as solar or wind energy. It's cleaner, safer, and less expensive in the long run, since you're not paying for gas."
The list of guidelines furnished by the Los Angeles Fire Department offers many tips for keeping generator use as safe as possible, yet it makes clear that the risks of having a home generator are always a reality. The LAFD notes that generators can produce high volumes of carbon monoxide at a very rapid rate; this gas can prove deadly. The guidelines also advise homeowners to never operate these generators in enclosed spaces, such as patios or sheds and to keep them as far from people and pets as possible.
In addition to the dangers posed by carbon monoxide, generators can also pose electrical hazards. As such, the LAFD article exhorts users to ensure that their generators do not use frayed or worn extension cords, and that the generator itself is never overloaded.
